The spatial distribution of tropical tree species can affect the consistency of the estimators in commercial forest inventories, therefore, appropriate sampling procedures are required to survey species with different spatial patterns in the Amazon Forest. For this, the present study aims to evaluate the conventional sampling procedures and introduce the adaptive cluster sampling for volumetric inventories of Amazonian tree species, considering the hypotheses that the density, the spatial distribution and the zero-plots affect the consistency of the estimators, and that the adaptive cluster sampling allows to obtain more accurate volumetric estimation. We use data from a census carried out in Jamari National Forest, Brazil, where trees with diameters equal to or higher than 40 cm were measured in 1,355 plots. Species with different spatial patterns were selected and sampled with simple random sampling, systematic sampling, linear cluster sampling and adaptive cluster sampling, whereby the accuracy of the volumetric estimation and presence of zero-plots were evaluated. The sampling procedures applied to species were affected by the low density of trees and the large number of zero-plots, wherein the adaptive clusters allowed concentrating the sampling effort in plots with trees and, thus, agglutinating more representative samples to estimate the commercial volume.
AbstractAccuracy of volume calculation methods for estimating the volume of Pinus taeda L. trees. The objective of this study was to evaluate different volume calculation methods for Pinus taeda stands in three different ages to verify which method is more feasible in forest inventories. In total, 98 trees were sampled, applying differents volume calculation methods and comparing them with the observed volume (water-displacement technique). The experiment was evaluated using the completely randomized design, where every tree has configured a repetition of data and each method of treatment space. The test of homogeneity of Bartlett and analysis of variance was applied to all ages, followed by the Tukey test to 5% of significance to compare the averages of the volumes. Regardless of age, all volume calculation methods overestimated the volumes of trees in relation to observed volume. For the ages of nine and thirteen, the volumes obtained by methods of Huber, Pressler and Sectional Standard presented minor deviations when compared with the actual volume. At age 20 years the method of Hohenadl (5 sections) presented the best precision, followed the methods of Huber, Sectional Standard and Pressler. The oldest trees (20 years) have, in general, more homogeneous waste trees with younger ages. The Huber method presented the best volume
AbstractFloristic-structural variations of a tree community associated to edge distance in a forest patch in “Planalto Sul Catarinense” region. In order to compare the floristic-structural organization of a tree species community in an Araucaria Forest patch, in the municipality of Lages, SC, a phytossociological survey was conducted in five 100 x 20 m transections, subdivided into 10 x 20 m plots, perpendicular to the patch edges. It were measured and determined all trees with circumference at breast height (dbh) ≥ 15,7 (cbh and height). The data were analyzed by the importance value index (IVI), Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DCA); non-parametric multivariate analyze of variance (NPMANOVA); mean values of abundance, basal area, tree height, richness, diversity and evenness; and frequency of individuals within diameter and height classes. Although both sectors had Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol.) Kuntze and Lithraea brasiliensis Marchand among the species with the highest IVI values, there was a turnover in other IVI positions, which reflected in the variation of tree species organization among sectors (p=0.022), also observed in DCA. Related to community structure (mean values of abundance and tree height and individuals frequency in size classes), no differences were detected. We conclude that edges represented an important source of floristic-structural heterogeneity in the studied patch. Keywords: Fragmentation; araucaria forest; tree species.
ABSTRACTThis study aimed to evaluate changes in the organization of tree species communities due to edge effects in a forest remnant in southern Brazil. Five transects were installed in the study area, perpendicular to the forest edge, with the dimensions of 100x20 m, subdivided into ten plots. The edge sector was defined for the distance of 0-50 m and the interior for the distance of 50-100 m. All trees with circumference at breast height ≥ 15.7 were measured, identified and classified into regeneration guilds. The sectors were compared using the t test for normally distributed variables, Mann-Whitney test for non-normal distributions, rarefaction, for richness, and Chi-square test applied to a contingency table, to check the distribution of individuals of different regeneration guilds. The sectorization as a function of edge and interior represented an important source of forest heterogeneity, once the most marginal part of the fragment was characterized by a tree component of higher density, smaller average height and prevalence of individuals of light demanding
Background: Work studies are fundamental for the development and assessment of timber harvesting systems aimed at rationalising and improving forest management activities. Methods: This study evaluated the operational performance of a mechanised whole-tree harvesting system in 32-year-old Pinus taeda L. stands producing multiple timber products. A time and motion study at the cycle element level was conducted to evaluate the operational performance of each component of the harvesting system. Equations were developed to estimate the productivity of tree extraction activity with a wheeled skidder and log loading with a mechanical loader. Results: Tree felling with an excavator-based harvester had the highest mean productivity (135 m3 per productive machine hour), followed by tree extraction with a wheeled skidder (117 m3 per productive machine hour), while manually processing larger logs with a chainsaw had the lowest productivity (25.7 m3 per productive machine hour). Operator, extraction distance and mean log volume had a significant effect on the performance of different activities and were included in productivity models. Conclusions: Operational performance of equipment was variable and dependent on the effect of the operator, extraction distance and log volume. Thus, the use of models to estimate productivity considering such factors, coupled with reduced delays to increase utilisation of equipment, will contribute to the better management and planning of forest harvesting operations under the evaluated conditions.
