-The objective of this work was to analyze the spatial distribution and the behavior of species richness and diversity in a shrub savanna fragment, in 2003 and 2014, using ordinary kriging, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. In both evaluation years, the measurements were performed in a fragment with 236.85 hectares, in which individual trees were measured and identified across 40 plots (1,000 m 2 ). Species richness was determined by the total number of species in each plot, and diversity by the Shannon diversity index. For the variogram study, spatial models were fitted and selected. Then, ordinary kriging was applied and the spatial distribution of the assessed variables was described. A strong spatial dependence was observed between species richness and diversity by the Shannon diversity index (<25% spatial dependence degree). Areas of low and high species diversity and richness were found in the shrub savanna fragment. Spatial distribution behavior shows relative stability regarding the number of species and the Shannon diversity index in the evaluated years.Index terms: geostatistics, Shannon index, variogram.
Topographical, soil and climatic influences in an Atlantic Forest remnant in Serra da Mantiqueira, Minas Gerais State ABSTRACTUnderstanding the correlations among environmental variables and species distribution in a forest, including its dynamics and carbon storage, is one of the main goals in forest ecology. Therefore, the present study aimed to correlate aspects of vegetation to soil and climatic variables of a forest remnant in Bocaina de Minas, Serra da Mantiqueira, MG. Multivariate ordination techniques (PCA and CCA) and multiple regressions were used to represent these correlations. Altitude was highlighted as a synthetic environmental variable, comprising several gradients within the area (especially edaphic and conservation). This was the variable that best explained the distribution of species, forest dynamics and carbon stock in the area.
Stratification of an eucalyptus plantation through geostatistical interpolators and remote sensingAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the use of geostatistical interpolators and remote sensing images for the stratification of Eucalyptus sp. stands, at harvesting age. Estimates by stratified random sampling and systematic sampling were compared for the timber volume variable. The study area was a clonal plantation of Eucalyptus sp. in the municipality of Lagoa Grande, in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The forest inventory was performed in 2011, considering four sampling situations and different plot numbers. The area stratification was carried out based on kriging of the basal area (target variable), on the reflectance values in the TM5 band (auxiliary variable) extracted from a Landsat 5 TM image, and on the cokriging of these variables. Basal area and reflectance in the TM5 band showed a spatial dependence structure. Stratification reduced the sampling error up to 40%, in comparison with that generated from systematic sampling. Remote sensing images and kriging and cokriging interpolators are efficient to define the strata in Eucalyptus sp. stands, as a consequence of the higher precision of the stratified random sampling estimators, which allow more precise volume estimates of the forest inventory than those of systematic sampling.Index terms: Eucalyptus, cokriging, images, forest inventory, kriging.
