The amount of leisure time is essential for the psychosocial functioning of individuals and their health. The work-life balance (W-LB) is a particularly important aspect. In 2018, a study was carried out on the population of adult inhabitants of Wroclaw (Poland) (N=898). The survey method was used, based on a dedicated, structured and highly standardised interview questionnaire as the research tool. The study was based on a quota sample. Research objectives: to identify the amount of leisure time and changes in the amount of leisure time in comparison with the period five years ago and their socio-demographic determinants. A total of 49% of the respondents had less than 20 hours of leisure time per week while 51% had less leisure time than five years earlier. The amount of leisure time and changes in that amount occurring in recent years depended on the respondents’ occupational activity, age and income. What drew particular attention were leisure time deficits among: adults throughout the whole cycle of their occupational activity and among respondents with a lower economic status and those with a higher level of education. The results have an applicative value and will be used to develop a programme to promote the idea of W-LB among Wroclaw inhabitants. The effectiveness of the intervention depends on whether or not the following systemic solutions are adopted: 1) support for working people throughout the whole cycle of their professional activity, especially for those aged 35–54; 2) counteracting social and health-based inequalities.
Biologiczny wymiar życia społecznego nieustannie zadziwia bogactwem zagadnień i aspektów, które wpisują się w obszar zainteresowań przedstawicieli różnych dyscyplin naukowych i środowisk naukowo-badawczych. Współczesny postęp medycyny, tempo zmian, technicyzacja procedur, procesów komunikacyjnych, intensywność rozwoju biotechnologicznego skutkują m.in. faktem, że zagadnienia z zakresu problematyki dotyczącej biologicznego wymiaru życia społecznego, analizowane są z perspektywy różnych paradygmatów, teorii, stanowisk-a pozycja, którą oddajemy do państwa dyspozycji stanowi znakomite zobrazowanie owego bogactwa. Prawo do niewiedzy a obowiązek wiedzy w dobie ryzyka genetycznego, w którym autor scharakteryzował możliwości, jakie genetyka stwarza neoliberalnej polityce państwa w zakresie kontroli jednostek.
Throughout Europe and the United States, more than 60% of all cancer incidents occur in older people. Therefore, the aim of this study was to understand the level of fear people have regarding cancer and older people's beliefs about cancer pain, cancer treatment, and the curability of cancer. We conducted a survey in 2012, in which the sample was comprised of 910 adult residents of Wroclaw, Poland, to ascertain the beliefs people have about cancer and the degree of fear people have with respect to cancer. The majority of the respondents reported having a high level of fear, and this level of fear increased with age. Moreover, the oldest people (65 years and above) expressed fatalistic beliefs with respect to cancer. Our observations may guide health promotion campaigns and cancer prevention programs.
Introduction. Poland is among the countries which reported the highest rates of mortality from cancer. The health behaviours of people are influenced, among other things, by their beliefs about cancer, but their evaluation of oncological institutions and specialists seems also to be of great importance. Objectives. 1. How the respondents evaluate Polish oncology: a) the conditions of treatment in oncology hospitals, b) access to oncological medical services, c) the competence of oncologists. 2. What are the socio-cultural factors of the assessment of Polish oncology? 3. What is the influence of the grade level of the assessment of Polish oncology on the degree of fear and the knowledge about cancer? Materials and method. The study was carried out with a sample of 910 adult residents of Wroclaw in south-west Poland. Quota sampling was used. An interview questionnaire was used as the method. Results. Analysis of the data showed a negative image of Polish oncology, according to the study participants: dissatisfaction with both treatment conditions and with access to medical services. Assessment of Polish oncology depends primarily on education, age and economic situation, as well as 'family history of cancer', and attitude towards doctors. The lower the rating of Polish oncology, the lower the medical knowledge, and the higher the level of fear of cancer. Conclusions. Negative assessment of Polish oncology perpetuates the fear of cancer in society. There is a need for constant improvement of the quality of medical oncology services, for building public trust in physicians, to fight inequalities in health, and to take into account the lay perspectives in developing strategies to combat cancer.
