One of the features of advanced life sciences research in recent years has been its internationalisation, with countries such as China and South Korea considered 'emerging biotech' locations. As a result, cross-continental collaborations are becoming common generating moves towards ethical and legal standardisation under the rubric of 'global bioethics'. Such a 'global', 'Western' or 'universal' bioethics has in turn been critiqued as an imposition upon resource-poor, non-Western or local medical settings. In this article, we propose that a different tack is necessary if we are to come to grips with the ethical challenges that inter-continental biomedical research collaborations generate. In particular we ask how national systems of ethical governance of life science research might cope with increasingly global research collaborations with a focus on Sino-European collaboration. We propose four 'spheres' - deliberation, regulation, oversight and interaction - as a helpful way to conceptualise national systems of ethical governance. Using a workshop-based mapping methodology (workshops held in Beijing, Shanghai, Changsha, Xian, Shenzen and London) we identified three specific ethical challenges arising from cross-continental research collaborations: (1) ambiguity as to which regulations are applicable; (2) lack of ethical review capacity not only among ethical review board members but also collaborating scientists; (3) already complex, researcher-research subject interaction is further complicated when many nationalities are involved.
Biologiczny wymiar życia społecznego nieustannie zadziwia bogactwem zagadnień i aspektów, które wpisują się w obszar zainteresowań przedstawicieli różnych dyscyplin naukowych i środowisk naukowo-badawczych. Współczesny postęp medycyny, tempo zmian, technicyzacja procedur, procesów komunikacyjnych, intensywność rozwoju biotechnologicznego skutkują m.in. faktem, że zagadnienia z zakresu problematyki dotyczącej biologicznego wymiaru życia społecznego, analizowane są z perspektywy różnych paradygmatów, teorii, stanowisk-a pozycja, którą oddajemy do państwa dyspozycji stanowi znakomite zobrazowanie owego bogactwa. Prawo do niewiedzy a obowiązek wiedzy w dobie ryzyka genetycznego, w którym autor scharakteryzował możliwości, jakie genetyka stwarza neoliberalnej polityce państwa w zakresie kontroli jednostek.
The aim of the article is to perceive the understanding of autonomy by conscious, empowered patients through an awareness of responsibility for their own health and knowledge of their rights. This perception was made by analysing their statements published in 16 online medical forums and portals, which referred to the components of autonomy. One hundred and twenty-seven posts qualified for qualitative analysis. Based on the research findings, it was concluded that the authors of the posts (intuitively) properly identified autonomy (although they did not use this notion as such), paying attention to principal, formative qualities and inherent rights. They identify these qualities based on the course and characteristics of interactions between patients and healthcare practitioners (exposing their deficits), within the context of participants’ rights and duties as well as their opinions about physicians’ qualifications and desired (mainly soft) competences.
The article examines the question of emotions experienced by patients, users of medical portals, who “found themselves” in the complex structure of the healthcare system in Poland, emotions arising from interactions with medical professionals, and in the process of experiencing the course of disease. Statements published by users of medical portals/internet forums were analyzed. The research sample consisted of 15 medical portals with high level of activity of registered users. The analysis was based on statements describing the situation (or its context, or actions of participants involved in the interactions) determining the experienced emotions.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
