Background: Identifying human remains which are skeletonized, carbonized, disfigured, or fragmentized is a common task for forensic anthropologists and odontologists. Case presentation: A case of unknown skeletonized remains is reported in this investigation, which was found in a mass grave in Damascus Countryside governorate, Syria, in 2017. The post-mortem (PM) examination of bones and teeth was completed in al-Muwasat University Hospital in Damascus. Skull and pelvic bones showed Caucasoid male traits: the fourth rib and teeth examination estimated the age to be between 30 and 40 years, and the long bone estimated the stature in centimeters to be between 172 and 179. Intact dentition with tiny fracture in the incisal edge of the upper right central incisor-along with pathological fracture of right patella-was noted. Matching with ante-mortem (AM) smile photograph and radiograph of the right knee led to positive identification. Conclusions: The present study highlights the importance of maintaining and storage of medical radiographs or any other records that show the teeth or bones of the person.
Objective: .Streptococcus mutans is considered one of the bacteria that causes necrosis, as it metabolism sugar to obtain energy, producing an acidic environment and causing depression in the enamel surface, which causes the dissolution of the calcium molecule, a problem of cavited in the tooth; so the aim of the research is to evaluate the effect of mouthwashes chlorhexidine 0.12% - honey 50% - propolis 5% on Streptococcus mutans in children.Study design: A laboratory study to assess the efficiency of chlorhexidine, honey and Propolis on Streptococcus mutans counts. The sample included 60 children divided into: G1 (Chlorhexidine 0.12% = 20 children), G2 (Propolis 5% = 20 children), G3 (Honey 100% = 20 children). The data was analyzed using the statistical analysis program SPSS, version 13.00, at a confidence level of 95% (P <0.05(. Paired sample T test was used to compare the variable means of the values of the studied variables.Results: There is significant difference between three groups. The reduction ratio was 89.97% in G1, 85.49% in G2 and 76.29% in G3.Conclusion: This study demonstrated the effectiveness of mouthwashes of chlorhexidine, propolis and honey on the bacteria of Streptococcus mutans.
Objective: the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of 3D guided piezocision (a minimally invasive surgical technique) in accelerating orthodontic tooth movements (OTM) since the literature does not provide high-quality evidence to confirm that Piezocision results in significant OTM acceleration. Furthermore, no randomized controlled trial (RCT) has utilized 3D piezo-surgical guides to accelerate severe orthodontic de-crowding.Study design: A Parallel-group randomized controlled trial was conducted on patients with severe mandibular teeth irregularity. Sample size was 34 patients (19 females and 15 males), then subjects were divided into two parallel groups using Minitab® Version 17 software. First group received conventional orthodontic treatment, whereas the second group received 3D- guided piezo-assisted orthodontic one. Little irregularity index (LII) changes were studied using dental cast in four time points before inserting the first archwire (T0), after 1 month of treatment onset (T1), after 2 months (T2), and at the end of the alignment stage (T3) and the overall alignment time (OAT) required to complete anterior alignment of the mandibular arch was also measured.Results: Ninety-five severe dental crowding patients were evaluated for eligibility, 46 of them fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Thirty-four participants were allocated to the treatment groups randomly. There were no withdrawals during the trial phases. Accordingly, the results of 34 patients were statistically analyzed. OAT was reduced by 48% in the experimental group compared to the control group, with a statistically significant difference between the two groups . Likewise, the time difference between all arch changes was significantly lower when 3D guided piezocision was performed, except for the first arch (T0) and the last arches (T3).Conclusion: Minimally invasive 3D guided Piezocision seems to be a very effective and easy technique in accelerating orthodontic tooth movement.
Dentigerous cyst is benign odontogenic cystic lesion that envelops the crown of an impacted tooth. Like odontogenic tumors, dentigerous cysts may grow to large sizes before they are diagnosed, and the large radiolucent cystic lesions associated with an impacted tooth are often diagnosed as odontogenic tumors like unicystic ameloblastoma or others developmental cystic lesions like odontogenic keratocyst, but less likely to be dentigerous cysts. In this case report we highlight the first case of huge bi-locular dentigerous cyst in a 35-year-old woman related with impacted mandibular canine.
