Medan City in Indonesia, is rich with iconic forms in the form of historical buildings and cultural products of the past. On the other hand, Medan City tourism has been known since the Dutch colonial era, but has not been supported by the availability of souvenir products. This research article describes the revitalization of the iconic forms of Medan City. The aim is to examine the potential of iconic forms to be used as the basis for the development of relief-dimensional painting as a tourism souvenir product. This research use desciptive qualitative approach. The replicated method is a combination of survey method and creation method. Sources of research data are written data, photo data, interview results, notes on the creation process, and appreciative assessments. Data analysis was carried out using an interactive model: data reduction, data presentation, verification and conclusion drawing. The results showed that the iconic shapes of Medan City have great potential to be explored into original painting themes. Technically, the art of painting with relief dimensions is effectively developed with rubber sheet material, supported by strong texture work. Overall, the paintings produced have an aesthetic quality, exclusive as tourism souvenirs.
Artikel ini membahas tentang sejauhmana potensi nilai dan karakter tradisional dapat dikembangkan sebagai tema garapan dalam eksplorasi kreatif seni lukis masa kini. Artikel berbasis hasil penelitian terapan ini, bertujuan menemukan bentuk dan wujud seni rupa tradisi yang khas, khususnya dari etnik Batak Toba, untuk dikembangkan secara kreatif dalam garapan seni lukis Sumatera Utara. Tujuan dimaksud diwujudkan melalui aplikasi teknologi digital serta rekayasa media dan peralatan melukis. Metode yang digunakan adalah survey dan metode penciptaan kreatif, mulai persiapan, inkubasi, iluminasi, eksekusi, konfirmasi, dan validasi. Analisis data disajikan dalam bentuk deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa eksplorasi seni lukis modern Sumatera Utara melahirkan karakter bentuk orisinil, sebagai penanda jati diri dan promosi budaya rupa etnik Batak Toba. Karakter seni lukis eksploratif ini berkontribusi pada pengayaan budaya rupa nasional. Hasil penelitian juga menemukan efektivitas penggunakan teknologi digital dan rekayasa media seni lukis, sebagai stimulasi penggunaan media alternatif dalam pengembangan model industri kreatif.
IbM program activities are aimed to help street children and poor cities that are assisted by SKA and PKPA in developing skill-based life skills education. Operationally this activity aims to help street children and urban poor in production. Types of production that have been done, among others, make various handicrafts from beads and acrylic, and packaging products Marginal Industry House. Methods of activities in the form of training and mentoring in production practices, packaging design practices, business management training and practice of machine use. The article, a result of this research, discusses the creation of art painting based on ethnic visual art of Karo, which is expressed on rubber material dimension formed with heat conductor device. The purpose is to find the form of North Sumatera’s visual art which is particular and unique. Therefore, it can contribute to the enrichment of the local and national cultural value. The method used is survey method and creative creation method. The testing of the result of the creation was done through the assessment of competent critics and appreciative response of the observers and the community. The data analysis was conducted with the quantitative and qualitative descriptive method. The result of this research shows that the character of Karo ethnic’s visual art as the basis of the art paintings’ development is commonly decorative and mythical. Rubber material as screen area with heat conductor is quite effective to explore the real texture and relief image, as well as producing artistic effect when exposed with light. Based on the critics’ and the observers’ appreciative response, the created works have had the quality of intra-aesthetic and extra-aesthetic, strong uniqueness and characteristics, hence it can contribute to enriching the local and national culture.
