In women at elevated familial risk, quality-assured MRI screening shifts the distribution of screen-detected breast cancers toward the preinvasive stage. In women undergoing quality-assured MRI annually, neither mammography, nor annual or half-yearly ultrasound or CBE will add to the cancer yield achieved by MRI alone.
Identification of the cortical area responsible for motor hand function was similar with functional MR imaging and with direct stimulation at surgery. A space-occupying lesion can change the cortical representation of motor hand function.
Static and dynamic magnetic resonance imaging studies were performed in 69 patients with bone and soft-tissue tumors. T1-weighted spin-echo (SE) imaging after intravenous administration of gadolinium diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) improved the differentiation of necrotic from viable areas; the contrast-to-noise ratio (C/N) between tumor and muscle was an average of 44% lower compared with that in T2-weighted SE imaging. The C/N between tumor and bone marrow or fatty tissue was 43% and 37% lower, respectively, compared with that in nonenhanced T1-weighted SE imaging. Dynamic changes of signal intensity (SI) after Gd-DTPA enhancement were assessed with fast low-angle shot imaging. Of malignant tumors, 84.1% exhibited slopes higher than 30% per minute; 72% of benign tumors showed slopes lower than 30% per minute. The dynamic technique enabled assessment of the malignant potential of a tumor with some overlap (accuracy, 79.7%). Necrotic areas and peritumorous edema showed significantly lower and more gradual increases in SI than adjacent neoplastic tissue.
MR imaging with opposed gradient-recalled echo sequences and contrast enhancement provided data that allowed us to classify infiltration patterns and to quantify diffuse marrow involvement in multiple myeloma, both of which correlated to clinical staging and biopsy. Also, the MR data was of prognostic value. Therefore, like laboratory parameters, biopsies, and radiographs, MR imaging can be a supporting pillar in staging and planning treatment of patients with multiple myeloma.
Quantitative spirometrically controlled computed tomography (with 1-mm-thick sections) was performed twice (with a 5-minute break) in 24 adult patients with pulmonary disease to objectively evaluate parenchymal changes in the lung. Twelve measurements of attenuation were made on apical, carinal, and basal scans (right, left, total of each level, total right, total left, total of all three scans), obtained at 50% vital capacity. Since differences in measurements between the first and second examination were not significant, the method provides highly reproducible results.
ABSTRACT. Panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma is a very uncommon subtype of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas. In this case report, we describe the morphological (CT and MRI) and functional ( 18 F-FDG-PET and bone scan) imaging findings in a 35-year-old patient who suffered from slowly progressing multiple subcutaneous lesions caused by this rare disease.
