The objective of this study was to evaluate Maize (Zea mays L.) elite lines currently available in CIMMYT's lowland tropical breeding program in Latin America under multiple abiotic stresses and identify lines with tolerance to drought, N deficiency, and combined heat and drought stress (HTDS). An incomplete line‐by‐tester design was used to evaluate 436 testcrosses under nonstressed conditions, 507 under N deficiency, 417 under drought stress (DS), and 368 under HTDS in 30 season‐by‐location combinations between 2012 and 2015. Elite lines CLRCY016, CML269, CML550, and CML551 performed well across all conditions, while CLQRCWQ118, CLWN306, and CML576 showed good performance under DS and N deficiency. CML574 was tolerant to DS and HTDS. Moreover, CML550 and CML574 are known for their partial tolerance to maize lethal necrosis. Grain yield measured under DS was to some extent predictive of attainable grain yield under N‐deficient conditions (r = 0.65; P < 0.01) and HTDS (r = 0.54; P < 0.01) as indicated by the correlation across treatments. The fact that only a few lines were tolerant across treatments re‐emphasizes the need to separately screen germplasm under each abiotic stress. Based on high best linear unbiased predicted general combining ability (BLUP GCA), it will be possible to develop hybrids tolerant to multiple abiotic stresses without incurring any yield penalty under nonstressed conditions using these inbred lines.
The partial results of a project from CYMMIT are presented in this article, whose objective is to determine the effects of the agricultural reforms of the corn seed industries in the developing countries, specially the role of the private and official sectors in the production of varieties and hybrids and the release of improved seeds. The analysis is based mainly on asurvey of the seed industries, conducted during 1993 and 1994. The results of the analysis of the total sale of improved seed in 1993, prices according to type and seed origin and the participation of the public and private sectors in developingimproved seed in the Central American countries and Mexico are shown here. The main result from the analysis is that the official sectors are withdrawing from the production and sale of seed, and aiming their efforts to wards breeding and germplasm development. Likewise, the private sectors are important factors of the seed production and sale. The private sector depends on the official materials for their seed sales, specially the small locally financed enterprises and cooperatives of seed producers, as well as Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO's).
Central America is facing serious problems concerning erosion and poor management of natural resources. Poverty is usually the source and cause of such problem as well as the high population growth. One major problem is the intense usage of mountain slopes in the production of basic grains under traditional migratory agricultural methods. It is a well established tradition to consider these areas as a source of cheap labor force and also as a region of subsistence for a rural impoverished population. Nevertheless, a high percentage of both the population and agricultural production of Central America is to be located in such areas, and mountain slopes constitute over 80% of the regional extension. This document presents an anylisis of the perspectives for sustainable development in the mountain slops of Central America and the challenges faced by researchers and by those in charge of planning and implementing development policies in the area. With different degrees of intensity, all area countries are facing the same problems in their mountain slope areas; as a result, it is necessay to generate information on the development of new methods, adequated to the exploitation of mountain slops, the formulation of local and national policies, the coordination with institutions which take into account the local reality and the need of a sustainable development of the region.
