The morphology and histology of the reproductive tract of males of the predator Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) fed on different diets were studied. P. nigrispinus was fed on diets of: larvae of Alabama argillacea (Hübner), Tenebrio molitor L., Musca domestica L., and an artificial diet. The male reproductive tract, independent of diet, showed testes with intense red coloration in a compact, circular, or slightly oval structure. The vasa deferentia were similar in color to the testes and formed long filaments, which joined with the yellow-cream colored ejaculatory duct. The morphological characteristics of the male reproductive tract were similar under all diets, except for the artificial one. The histological studies demonstrated that independent of the diet the testes of P. nigrispinus were composed of four to six follicles. The testes with six follicles generally had four developed and two atrophied follicles. The morphological and histological differences of the testes of P. nigrispinus when fed with different prey are presented and discussed.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a flutuação populacional de espécies da ordem Coleoptera (Insecta) em plantios de Eucalyptus grandis na região de Santa Bárbara, Minas Gerais. Os coleópteros foram coletados por meio de armadilhas luminosas, acionadas durante uma noite, a cada 15 dias, de julho de 1993 a junho de 1994. Foram coletados 5.641 indivíduos da ordem Coleoptera, sendo 866 e 4.775 identificados em nível de gênero e, ou, espécie e família, respectivamente. A família com maior número de indivíduos foi Carabidae, com 74,55%, seguida por Scarabaeidae e Elateridae, com 10,12 e 3,98% dos indivíduos coletados, respectivamente. As espécies mais coletadas foram Isonychus albicinctus (Scarabaeidae), Colaspis jolivetti (Chrysomelidae) e Cyclocephala laminata (Scarabaeidae), com 472, 317 e 16 indivíduos, correspondendo a 54,50, 36,61 e 1,85% dos indivíduos identificados por espécie, respectivamente. A região de Santa Bárbara apresenta fauna diversificada de espécies da ordem Coleoptera, mas com baixas possibilidades de surtos. As maiores densidades populacionais dos coleópteros ocorreram em novembro e dezembro, época em que se deve realizar o monitoramento desses insetos.

The reproductive potential and population growth (r m and λ) of the predator Supputius cincticeps (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) were evaluated using a life and fertility table. S. cincticeps was reared on one plant of Eucalyptus cloeziana in the field and fed with Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) pupae. Females of this predator had a net reproductive rate (R o ) of 21.02 females/female; an intrinsic rate of population increase (r m ) of 0.041 and finite rate of increase (λ) of 1.042. This resulted in population growth of S. cincticeps in the eucalyptus plant with a doubling time of 17.01 days. This natural enemy can be reared under field conditions with alternative prey for use in biological control. Such individuals of S. cinticeps will be better adapted to field conditions when they are liberated.

Reproductive potential, longevity, life expectancy, and fertility life tables of Brontocoris tabidus (Signoret) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), a predator of lepidopteran defoliators in eucalyptus (Eucalyptus spp.) plantations, were studied in the field. After a 50-d preoviposition period (emergence of adults to the deposition of the first egg mass), ovipositional activity of B. tabidus continued until females died at 160 d. Females laid an average of 4.2 eggs per day and 601.1 eggs in a lifetime. Gross and net reproductive rates were 216.7 and 75.8 females, respectively. Generation time was 146.1 d, the period for doubling the population was 23.4 d, intrinsic rate was 0.03, and finite population increase was 1.03. Number of females per generation increased at 33.4 times. Results from our field studies indicate that B. tabidus has greater potential reproduction, oviposition period, and longevity than was expected from previous laboratory experiments. This suggests that B. tabidus has potential as a biological control agent to limit economically damaging pests in eucalyptus plantations.

Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) is a common natural predator of defoliating caterpillars in agricultural and forest systems. Insecticides acting as growth regulators of insect pests can indirectly affect their predators through consumption of contaminated prey. We examined the reproductive performance of P. nigrispinus fed on caterpillars of Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) reared on soybean leaves exposed to the chitin synthesis inhibitor, diflubenzuron. Caterpillars of A. gemmatalis were fed for 12 h with treated soybean leaves and offered to adults of the predator P. nigrispinus over five consecutive days. The fertility of P. nigrispinus was reduced when feeding on diflubenzuron treated caterpillars, especially at the beginning of the reproductive period, but recovered 3 weeks later. The effects of diflubenzuron ingestion on the life table parameters of P. nigrispinus included an increase in the period taken to double the population size, and reductions in the intrinsic rate of population increase, generation duration, and net reproductive rate. Diflubenzuron therefore had an indirect negative effect on the reproduction and the population dynamics of the non-target predator P. nigrispinus. Clearly, its use in integrated pest management requires further evaluation.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo estudar a flutuação populacional de espécies da ordem Coleoptera em plantio de Eucalyptus urophylla no município de Almerin, estado do Pará. Esses insetos foram coletados com armadilhas luminosas durante uma noite, a cada quinze dias, de setembro de 1995 a agosto de 1996 com os exemplares identificados de acordo com coleções entomológicas e com a literatura especializada, e divididos em grupos identificados em nível de espécie (INE) ou de família (INF). Foram coletados 132 espécies da ordem Coleoptera, sendo 23 identificadas por espécie e 109 por família, com 2972 e 7187 indivíduos respectivamente. As espécies mais abundantes foram Anomala sp.1, Leucothireus sp. (Scarabaeidae) e Ciclocephala lamminata (Dynastidae) com 93,4% dos indivíduos do primeiro grupo. Carabidae apresentou o maior número de indivíduos (6411) e de espécies (31) dos insetos identificados por família. Todas as coletas apresentaram indivíduos da ordem Coleoptera, com maior número de exemplares dessa ordem em janeiro de 1996.

Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, identificar um conjunto de atributos do solo correlacionados com a produtividade do arroz de terras altas visando estabelecer as condições de solo mais adequadas ao cultivo deste cereal em semeadura direta. Em Santo Antônio de Goiás, GO, em áreas cultivadas, respectivamente por um, dois e três anos com arroz em semeadura direta, foi determinada a produtividade do arroz e retiradas amostras de solo na camada de 0,00-0,10 m de um Latossolo Vermelho ácrico, para determinação de atributos físicos, químicos e biológicos. A produtividade apresentou correlação positiva com os teores de nitrogênio total, cobre, ferro, manganês, carbono e nitrogênio da biomassa microbiana (NBM), atividade enzimática total e da fosfatase ácida, quociente microbiano e relação NBM:N total e negativa com a microporosidade e quociente metabólico. Pela análise de regressão linear múltipla os atributos do solo que melhor explicaram, de maneira conjunta, a produtividade, foram os teores de cobre, ferro e nitrogênio da biomassa microbiana e a atividade da fosfatase ácida.
