Fertility table and rate of population growth of the predator Supputius cincticeps (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) on one plant of Eucalyptus cloeziana in the field

Abstract: The reproductive potential and population growth (r m and λ) of the predator Supputius cincticeps (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) were evaluated using a life and fertility table. S. cincticeps was reared on one plant of Eucalyptus cloeziana in the field and fed with Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) pupae. Females of this predator had a net reproductive rate (R o ) of 21.02 females/female; an intrinsic rate of population increase (r m ) of 0.041 and finite rate of increase (λ) of 1.042. This resulted in… Show more

“…On the other hand, the number of eggs per female of the N. roseipennis predator was lower with caterpillars of P. includens in insect resistant PI229358 soybean cultivar (Pfannenstiel & Yeargan, 1998) (Zanuncio et al, 2000) and of P. nigrispinus (Lemos et al, 2001;Freitas et al, 2006), because predators of the stink bug feed on plants to increase their capacity of postures in habitats with lower prey availability (Coll & Guershon, 2002;Zanuncio et al, 2004;Lemos et al, 2009b).…”

“…In the field, plant-derived substances can be an alternative or complementing the diet of predatory bugs (Crum et al, 1998), allowing them to maintain their longevity (Valicente and O'Neil, 1995;Zanuncio et al, 2004). The use of plants as dietary supplement may or may not lead to a better establishment of predatory bug populations, depending on the composition of the agroecosystems .…”

“…Alternative preys and artificial diets are used to mass rearing this predator P. nigrispinus (Fernandes et al, 1996;Zanuncio et al, 1996a;Saavedra et al, 1997;Zanuncio et al, 1996b), in view of the difficulties of using natural prey in the laboratory.…”
