This study determined the contribution of fish farming to the socio-economic status of fish farmers in Oyo State. A multistage sampling procedure was used to select the respondents resulting in a total number of 120 fish farmers used for this study. The primary data for this study was collected using an interview schedule which was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results revealed that the major constraint to fish farming was lack of access to credit facilities and the contribution of fish farming to the socio-economic status of fish farmers was high. At 0.05 level of significance, significant relationships exist between the respondents age (r=0.389, p=0.004), household size (r=0.286, p=0.002), years of experience (r=0.298, p=0.001), benefits (r=0.279, p=0.002) and their socio-economic status. Chi-square analysis of the result shows that there was significant relationship between marital status (χ2=5.835, p=0.023) and socio-economic status. Based on these findings, the study recommended that credit facilities should be made available to fish farmers and conventional feeds should be available to users at a reduced rate.
Attaining adequate child nutrition requires prompt access to relevant nutrition information. Present information reveals that the nutrition status of children younger than five years is threatened. In this study we sought to assess under-five nutritional status among farming households in Oyo State, Nigeria. A multistage sampling procedure was used to sample a total of 146 mothers as respondents. Data were collected using interview schedule and were analysed using percentage, mean, Chi-square and Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC). Most respondents were married (89.9%), currently working (93.2%) and had an average age, household size and monthly income of x¯ = 34.61, x¯ = 6 and ₦11,530, respectively. The respondents were mostly aware that cowpea is a major source of protein (x¯ = 0.99) and appropriate immunization of children is essential in aiding nutrition (x¯ = 0.99). They mostly sourced information on child nutrition from radio (x¯ = 0.87) and family and friends (x¯ = 0.87). Child nutritional status was high (59.6%). A significant relationship exists between educational attainment (χ2 = 10.781, P = 0.029), occupational status of the respondents (χ2 = 8.553, P = 0.014), awareness of adequate nutrition (r = 0.166, P = 0.044), source of information (r = 0.137, P = 0.010) and the child nutrition status. Improvements in nutrition campaign using available medical outlets and radio are advocated.
The study assessed the utilization of entrepreneurial information provided through agricultural radio programme on Diamond FM Radio, University of Ibadan for arable crop farmers in Ibadan Peri-Urban. Simple random sampling technique was used in selecting 120 respondents from a list of programme feedback/contact farmers. Most of the respondents (56.7%) were between the age range of 49-56 years, 82.5% were male, 86.7% were married, 52.5% had secondary school education, with an average household size of x̄=7.58, years of experience x̄=24.7, with average land area cultivated ( x̄= 4.75 hectares). Entrepreneurial information mostly accessed were on sustainable land preparation practices ( x̄= 0.99) and exploring early season of farming ( x̄=0.98). Market information was perceived as most relevant entrepreneurial information to their enterprise, with radio talk ( x̄=1.99) being the most preferred format for programme delivery. Respondents were mostly constrained by inadequate finance to purchase farm inputs ( x̄=1.99) in a bid to utilize entrepreneurial information. Entrepreneurial information utilized most were those on market information, soil conservation practices and mitigating the effects of climate change ( x̄=1.99). Significant relationship existed between membership of farmers’ association (χ2 = 5.091), household size (r=-0.186), relevance of entrepreneurial information to enterprise (r=0.801), format of programme delivery preferred (r=0.816), constraints to utilizing entrepreneurial information (r=0.374) and utilization of entrepreneurial information by arable crop farmers. Radio programme is thus an effective means of disseminating entrepreneurial information and its effective utilization is thus advocated.Key words: Arable crop farmers, entrepreneurial information, farmers’ forum, programme format, radio programme.
Charitable organisations complement government efforts in training young Nigerians in sustainable agricultural practices. A potent means of assessing the effectiveness of this training outlet/effort is the assessment of the sustained utilisation of the skill set acquired by its ex-agripreneurial trainees. A multistage sampling procedure was used to capture sample subjects. The last five sets of ex-trainees were purposively and proportionately sampled, this gave a sample size of 97. Both quantitative and qualitative data were elicited from the sample subjects. The majority (74.2 %) of the ex-trainees were male, middle-aged (38 years), made a net average monthly income of ₦ 46,618, and had an appreciable length of experience (11 years) as agripreneurs. The results of this study were as follows: training on the skill set received by the ex-agripreneural trainees was effective (75.3 %). Inadequate finance (x̅= 3.0), economic instability (x̅= 2.40) and poor state of infrastructure (x̅ = 2.23) were prominent among constraints associated with sustained utilisation of the skill set acquired. Enthusiasm about my enterprise (x̅= 1.72) was the attribute of an agripreneur possessed most. Sustained utilisation of skill set was high (61.9 %). A significant relationship was established between household size (r = 0,456), net average monthly income (r = 0.537), years of experience as an agripreneur (r = 0.509), perceived effectiveness of training received (r = 0.380), attributes of an entrepreneur possessed (r = 0.380), and sustained utilisation of skill set acquired. The study recommends that the training modules/templates are sustained and adapted by other training outlets/efforts owing to their effectiveness and the sustainability potentials it confers.
