Downy mildew management in protected cultivation of table grapes 'BRS Clara'Abstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of plastic cover and plastic shade screen, associated or not with fungicide spray programs, for downy mildew control in 'BRS Clara' table grapes in the first and second growing seasons in Northern Paraná State, and to analyze the influence of microclimatic variables on disease progress. The first and the second growing seasons assessed were from September to December and from January to May, respectively. The experiments were carriet out twice in two growing seasons -September to December, and January to May -in 2008 and 2009. The experimental design was a randomized block with seven treatments and four replicates. The following treatments were compared: plastic shade screen without fungicides for controlling downy mildew, or plastic shade with fungicides applied according to conventional standards; plastic cover without fungicide or with powdery mildew fungicides only; plastic cover with 25% or 50% of fungicides specified by conventional standards; and plastic cover with phosphite and copper fungicides. The plastic cover allows to reduce the number of fungicide applications required to control downy mildew up to 75%, in comparison to the plastic shade screen. The disease severity has a high positive correlation with the duration of leaf wetness and with the air relative humidity higher than 90%. Under the plastic shade screen, severity is also highly correlated with the amount of rainfall.
ABSTRACT. We estimated the genetic diversity of 49 accessions of the hot pepper species Capsicum chinensis through analyses of 12 physicochemical traits of the fruit, eight multi-categorical variables, and with 32 RAPD primers. Data from the physicochemical traits were submitted to analysis of variance to estimate the genetic parameters, and their means were clustered by the Scott-Knott test. The matrices from the individual and combined distance were estimated by multivariate analyses before applying Tocher's optimization method. All physicochemical traits were examined for genetic variability by analysis of variance. The responses of these traits showed more contribution from genetic than from environmental factors, except the percentage of dry biomass, content of soluble solids and vitamin C level. Total capsaicin had the greatest genetic divergence. Nine clusters were formed from the quantitative data based on the generalized distance of Mahalanobis, using Tocher's method; four were formed from the multi-categorical data using the Cole-Rodgers coefficient, and eight were formed from the molecular data using the Nei and Li coefficient. The accessions were distributed into 14 groups using Tocher's method, and no significant correlation between pungency and origin was detected. Uni-and multivariate analyses permitted the identification of marked genetic diversity and fruit attributes capable of being improved through breeding programs.
Effect of nitrogen and potassium fertilization on baby corn yieldThere is a lack of information regarding nitrogen and potassium fertilization on the production of baby corn. When ears are collected before grain formation, the amounts of required nutrients can be differentiated. This study evaluated the response of baby corn at different nitrogen and potassium fertilization rates in a medium texture soil in the region of Maringá PR Brazil. Data for adequate nutrient recommendation are produced for the crop, avoiding losses and environmental contamination. The experiment was conducted in the Iguatemi Experimental Farm during the summer harvest of 2010-2011 and the second corn crop of 2011. The experiment was arranged in a 4x4 factorial randomized block design with a, with 4 rates of nitrogen (0, 50, 75 and 100 kg ha Há grande carência de informações quanto à adubação com Nitrogênio e Potássio para a produção de minimilho.
The objective of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis and test its efficiency in summarizing the heterogeneous data of heritability estimates for the traits of grain yield (GY) and popping expansion (PE), and to provide reliable estimates of selection gains in popcorn. Therefore, 97 heritability estimates ( ) for popcorn GY and PE in the broad and narrow sense were used. The main procedures underlying the estimation of the combined heritability ( ) using the technique of meta-analysis consisted of i) an exploratory analysis of the set of heritability estimates to detect outliers using a box-plot chart, ii) the verification of the required statistical assumptions, iii) testing the involved heritability estimates for homogeneity, and iv) the calculation of the estimates of combined heritability. The meta-analysis facilitated the synthesis of the information pertaining to heritability in popcorn. The combined heritability estimates ( ) in the broad sense for GY and PE were 0.5208 ± 0.0229 and 0.6356 ± 0.0209, respectively, and in the narrow sense were 0.3290 ± 0.0292 and 0.3083 ± 0.0298, respectively.
