The paper begins by exposing Honneth's model as a theory of institutional intersubjectivity rather than a theory of the struggle for recognition. This model, however, was subject of criticism due to its supposedly acceptance of the social order of capitalistic market economy. In order to defend it from such objections, Honneth (2016) exposes the normative core of the socialist ideals as a version of social freedom. Finally, he presents a distinction between two forms of political intervention: an internal and an external struggle for recognition -and asserts the advantages of the former.
This paper presents a discussion on how the concept of the division of labour within society appears in the work of Émile Durkheim, of Karl Marx, and of Axel Honneth. Historically, that notion has been related to Durkheim’s De la division du travail social, but it was also a subject to which Marx and, more recently, Honneth directed their attention. In highlighting how those three authors conceptualise the division of labour, this paper intents to show that all of them, with their respective particularities, conceive modern societies as a normative order based on the principle of mutual recognition, which for its part is expressed in the historical process of the division of labour. Palavras-chave: Divisão do trabalho social; Émile Durkheim; Karl Marx; Axel Honneth; Reconhecimento.
The aim of this paper is to explore a tension between two concepts designed to expose social discomforts in Axel Honneth's mature work, namely social pathologies and anomie. Particular emphasis will be given to how they contribute or obstruct Honneth's apprehension of social tensions. In the first session of this exposition I will show that Honneth's interpretation of social pathologies is based on a conception of society as an organic whole (I). While this interpretation represents a slight change regarding Honneth's understanding of social pathologies in Das Recht der Freiheit, it does not change the fact that in his work subsequent to that book the concept of false developments has not been properly theorized. Accordingly, social discomforts related to deviations from expected patterns of a normative reconstruction remain largely ignored. This calls for a perspective more fully able to grasp the heteronomy of social life (II). As a result, in Honneth's mature work there seems to be a tension between the aims of a normative reconstruction and those of social critique, mainly due to an inability of the author to combine both elements of his social theory. In its final section (III), the paper will address that tension in order to critically contribute to Honneth's attempt to link normative reconstruction, social analysis and criticism.
This article discusses Axel Honneth's recent theory of recognition, as exposed in his book Freedom's Right (2001). The argument defended here is that Honneth's approach does not apprehend the normative implications of political conflicts, for it relies on what some critics have called normative history. Against that approach, this paper defends a model of social theory that is not committed to normative presuppositions of analysis. Rather, it seeks to understand how political struggles strive for normative authority. As an illustration of forms of recognition that are alternative to the ones Honneth calls normative, the paper builds on an example from Brazilian society.
