Bats have been increasingly studied in the last 15 years in Mato Grosso do Sul, and several records were not yet considered in reviews of South American bat distributions. Here, we present the bat species and their distributions in Mato Grosso do Sul based mainly on data compilation from literature, but also on complementary information from zoological collections, and our and colleagues' unpublished records. We found 74 species of bats within 42 genera and seven families already reported in Mato Grosso do Sul. Bat species in this state represent 44% of the Brazilian's bat species (E 169) and 7% of the world's bat richness (E 1120). Phyllostomidae (42) and Molossidae (17) were the richest families. Four species formerly cited for Mato Grosso do Sul are not supported by our compilation, and other 15 species recorded in the vicinity are listed as potential occurrences in this state. We additionally found controversial traits for specimens of Platyrrhinus helleri, and report Eumops dabbenei for the first time in Brazil. Most species were recorded in the regions of Cerrado (60) or Pantanal (57) in Mato Grosso do Sul, but only 16 in the Atlantic Forest. Records of Phyllostomidae species were mostly found in Cerrado and those of Molossidae, in Pantanal. Records in Mato Grosso do Sul determine edges of distribution for at least 22 species of South American bats. The overall known chiropteran fauna of Mato Grosso do Sul is highly diverse and new findings are expected through additional surveys. The doline Buraco das Araras is a peculiar environment and important destiny for ecotourism in the Serra da Bodoquena region, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Here we describe the bat fauna of the doline and surrounding areas, and report its use as dayroost by the bat Nyctinomops laticaudatus. Bats were mist-netted during two field expeditions, in November 2007 and January 2008. We captured 153 individuals of 10 species, mainly N. laticaudatus (n = 90) and Artibeus planirostris (n = 28). This is the first record of N. laticaudatus in the Serra da Bodoquena region; it was captured only in January when leaving the doline in dense flocks at dusk. Phyllostomus hastatus, Micronycteris sanborni, and Molossops temminckii are also new records for the Serra da Bodoquena region. Three individuals - A. planirostris, Carollia perspicillata and Glossophaga soricina - tagged in November were recaptured in January, indicating that these species are residents. The doline and bordering vegetation appear to be important sources of shelter and food for bat fauna maintenance.

ABSTRACT. We updated the checklist of mammals from Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil based on primary records only. One hundred and sixty-six mammal species were listed as occurring in the state, 47 of them being medium to large, 47 small mammal and 73 bat species. The listed species are distributed in 31 families: Didelphidae (17 spp.), Dasypodidae (7 spp.), Myrmecophagidae (2 spp.), Cebidae (1 sp.), Callithrichidae (2 spp.), Aotidae (1 sp.), Pitheciidae (1 sp.), Atelidae (1 sp.), Leporidae (1 sp.), Felidae (7 spp.), Canidae (4 spp.), Mustelidae (5 spp.), Mephitidae (2 spp.), Procyonidae (2 spp.), Tapiridae (1 sp.), Tayassuidae (2 spp.), Cervidae (4 spp.), Sciuridae (1 sp.), Cricetidae (22 spp.), Erethizontidae (1 sp.), Caviidae (3 spp.), Dasyproctidae (1 sp.), Cuniculidae (1 sp.), Echimyidae (4 spp.), Phyllostomidae (41 spp.), Emballonuridae (2 spp.), Molossidae (16 spp.), Vespertilionidae (9 spp.), Mormoopidae (1 sp.), Noctilionidae (2 spp.), and Natalidade (1 sp.). These numbers represent an increase of fourteen species with primary records for the state in comparison with the previously published checklist. However, it is evident the scarcity of information at several regions of the state, and the need of implementation of regional zoological collections. The state of Mato Grosso do Sul represent only 4.19% of the Brazilian territory, but the number of mammal species reach 24.13% of the known species occurring in the country.

ABSTRACT. Bat flies (Diptera, Streblidae and Nycteribiidae) in a Cerrado area of state of Goiás, Brazil. A survey of bat flies was carried out in the Brazilian savanna (Cerrado) in the Goiás state, Brazil. We collected 227 specimens of seventeen species belonging to nine genera of Streblidae and seven specimens of four species of Basilia Miranda-Ribeiro, 1903 (Nycteribiidae). Except for Paratrichobius longicrus (Miranda-Ribeiro, 1907) (Streblidae), all species are new recorded in Goiás.

Polydactyly in bats has rarely been observed; a few cases are recorded for insectivorous molossid and vespertilionid species in North America. Here we report polydactyly in the foliage‐roosting phyllostomid Artibeus lituratus, in the southern Pantanal floodplain and adjacent uplands, Brazil. Bats were mist‐netted in six populations, and capture rate per population was estimated. Of 444 A. lituratus individuals sampled, one female and one male exhibited supernumerary toes. These cases occurred in the two densest populations, in sites where forests are distributed in small disconnected fragments. This situation could favour increased inbreeding in A. lituratus and, indirectly, the manifestation of polydactyly.

O osteossarcoma (OS) é classificado como uma neoplasia de alto grau com células malignas que produzem osteóides. As neoplasias malignas primárias dos ossos são raras, representando menos de 5% de todos os tumores malignos. O OS pode ocorrer em qualquer faixa etária, porém, atinge principalmente crianças, adolescentes e adultos jovens durante o período de maior crescimento e desenvolvimento ósseo. O seu pico de incidência ocorre na segunda década de vida e apresenta predominância no sexo masculino, numa proporção de 1,6 para 1. Em adultos, o OS e considerado uma neoplasia secundaria, pois, sua origem está associada a uma condição previa como, por exemplo, irradiação, infartos ósseos, doença de Paget, ou até mesmo, outras patologias ósseas benignas. O diagnóstico precoce e decisivo quando discutimos sobre prognostico e tratamento, com a possibilidade de cirurgia preservadora do membro.

A Bacia do Alto Paraguai (BAP) inclui a planície inundável do Pantanal e as áreas altas no entorno que drenam para o rio Paraguai, uma região de transição entre quatro grandes domínios fitofisionômicos da América do Sul – Cerrado, Chaco, Amazônia e Mata Atlântica. A fauna da região é pobre em endemismos, porém as posições central e transicional no continente conferem enorme riqueza de animais vertebrados, oriundos de diferentes domínios, especialmente quanto à ordem Chiroptera. Aqui, revisamos as espécies de morcegos registradas na BAP e apresentamos mapas de distribuição e breve descrição de cada espécie, incluindo dados de tamanho, forma, cor, ambientes, abrigos, hábito alimentar e interações com predadores e parasitas. Encontramos registro de 93 espécies em sete famílias – Emballonuridae (3), Noctilionidae (2), Mormoopidae (2), Phyllostomidae (51), Natalidae (1), Molossidae (20) e Vespertilionidae (14). Foram registradas 66 espécies na planície e 84 no entorno; com 59 espécies reportadas na planície e no entorno. Quase dois terços das espécies (63%) foram registrados em cinco ou mais localidades na BAP, e um quinto (19%) em apenas uma localidade. A fauna de morcegos da BAP destaca a grande importância dessa região para a manutenção da diversidade de morcegos na América do Sul.
