Tuta absoluta (Meyrick, 1917) is the main pest of tomato crops in South America. Recently, it was also reported in several countries in Europe and the Middle East. Because of its invasive potential and the lack of information on the biology of T. absoluta, the present study aimed to estimate its thermal requirements and evaluate the effect of temperature on its development, survival, reproduction and longevity. The experiments were carried out at constant temperatures of 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30°C. T. absoluta completed its development at all these temperatures. The thermal requirements were estimated by linear regression; the insects required 416.7 degreedays to complete the cycle from egg to adult, and the lower temperature threshold was estimated to be 8.0°C. The upper temperature threshold estimated for the egg-adult cycle was 37.3°C. The pre-oviposition period was longer at 10°C, but the oviposition period was similar at all the temperatures tested. Fecundity was highest at 20 and 25°C, with averages of 134.8 and 149.1 eggs per female, respectively. The highest percentages of fertile eggs were recorded at 15, 20 and 25°C. At 10 and 30°C, only one egg clutch was laid by T. absoluta. No differences were recorded in the longevity of females and males of T. absoluta. The tomato leaf miner can develop over a wide range of temperatures; however, its reproduction and survival were negatively affected at the extreme constant temperatures tested. The temperature variation recorded in natural environments is suitable for this pest to infest tomato crops.

ABSTRACT. The toxicities of essential oils (EOs) from 18 species of Brazilian Piperaceae were assessed on eggs of the velvetbean caterpillar, Anticarsia gemmatalis. Oils were extracted using steam distillation, and dilutions were made for bioassays at concentrations of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0%. All EOs reduced larval hatching. The lowest lethal concentrations were obtained from Piper fuligineum (SP), Piper mollicomum "chemotype 1" (SP), Piper mosenii (PR), Piper aduncum (PA) and Piper marginatum (PA). Ovicidal activity is related to the potential toxicity of several compounds, especially dilapiolle, myristicin, asaricine, spathulenol and piperitone. According to our results, EOs from 16 Brazilian Piper species have potential for use as biorational botanical insecticides.

Tibraca limbativentris to is an important rice pest and occurs in all rice-growing regions of Latin America. The control this insect is accomplished with synthetic chemical insecticides, however, new approaches are needed to reduce risks to the environment, to the natural enemies and also to avoid the onset of insecticides resistance. This study was designed to assess the toxicity of essential oils (EOs) from leaves of Piper aduncum, P. gaudichaudianum, P. malacophyllum, P. marginatum and P. tuberculatum (Piperaceae) on rice stalk stink bug eggs, T. limbativentris. Essential oils were extracted with steam distillation and dilutions were made for bioassays at concentrations of 0.25; 0.5; 1.0; 2.0 and 4.0%. Essential oils from all species of Piperaceae displayed ovicidal activity. The LC 50 values indicated that both younger and older eggs were susceptible to these oils. Ovicidal activity is related to the potential toxicity of several compounds, especially dilapiolle, myristicin, cubebene, α-guaiene, longifolene, prezizane, spathulenol, sabinene and δ-2-carene. RESUMOTibraca limbativentris é uma importante praga do arroz e ocorre em todas as regiões de cultivo de arroz da América Latina. O controle destes inseto é realizado com inseticidas químicos sintéticos, no entanto, novas abordagens são necessárias para reduzir os riscos para o ambiente, inimigos naturais, e também para evitar o aparecimento da resistência aos inseticidas. Este estudo foi concebido para avaliar a toxicidade dos óleos essenciais (OEs) das folhas de Piper aduncum, P. gaudichaudianum, P. malacophyllum, P. marginatum e P. tuberculatum (Piperaceae) sobre ovos do percevejo do colmo do arroz, T. limbativentris. Os OEs foram extraídos por arraste de vapor d´agua e a partir destes foram feitas diluições nas concentrações de 0,25; 0,5; 1,0; 2,0 e 4,0% para os bioensaios. Os OEs de todas as espécies de Piperaceae apresentaram atividade ovicida. Os valores de CL 50 indicaram que tanto os ovos mais jovens quantos os mais velhos foram suscetíveis aos diferentes óleos. Esta atividade ovicida pode estar relacionada com a toxicidade dos vários compostos encontrados em cada OE, como o dilapiol, miristicina, cubebeno, α-guaieno, longifoleno, prezizano, espatulenol, sabineno e δ-2-careno. Assim, os OEs testados mostraram resultados promissores para serem utilizados como inseticidas vegetais.

The small tomato borer Neoleucinodes elegantalis (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is one of the major pests of solanaceous in Central and South America. Little is known about the role of temperature on the biological traits of this species. Development time of the immature stages and longevity and reproduction of adults of N. elegantalis at constant temperatures (15, 20, 25, 27, and 30 ± 1°C) were determined when larvae were fed on fruits of the tomato hybrid "Paronset." Neoleucinodes elegantalis completed its life cycle at temperatures between 15°C and 27°C, indicating that it can remain active throughout the year in the subtropical region of Brazil. The temperature threshold (T t) was 8.8°C for the egg stage and 7.7°C for the larval and pupal stages. The small tomato borer required 588.2 degrees-day for its full development. At 30°C, the eggs were infertile, indicating that temperatures above 27°C are deleterious to the fertilization/embryonic development of the studied population of N. elegantalis. The number of generations of N. elegantalis per year in the Brazilian subtropical region is lower than for populations developing in warmer tropical areas. A relationship was found between the number of generations and the increase in latitude.

These models provide an important tool to predict the occurrence of the immature stages of T. absoluta in the field in order to determine the best period for implementing control measures. This is an important contribution to the development of pest management strategies for T. absoluta. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry.

Temperature is considered to be an important abiotic factor influencing insect reproduction. Despite the importance of Plutella xylostella L. (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) as a pest of brassicaceous crops worldwide, the effects of temperature on its reproduction are not well understood. We evaluated the effect of constant temperatures ranging from 10 to 32.5°C on the reproduction of P. xylostella and developed an oviposition model for the species. The model combined temperature-dependent parameters of total fecundity, age-specific oviposition rate and age-specific survival. Additionally, we modelled population growth as a function of temperature. The estimated parameters allowed us to discuss the possible consequences of global warming on P. xylostella distribution. Temperature affected the length of pre-oviposition after adult emergence, oviposition period, longevity, total fecundity and egg viability. The model predicted that both daily egg production and length of oviposition period decreased at temperatures below 15°C and above 25°C. Population growth increased linearly with temperature in a range from 10°C to 25°C; however, the model predicted a reduction in population growth at temperatures above 28.6°C. Data suggested that temperature plays a critical role in P. xylostella reproduction, and subtle differences in average temperature could have an impact on its population growth. This is especially important in the context of global climate change, which in turn could alter the distribution and abundance of the pest in some regions of the world.
