INSECTICIDAL POTENTIAL OF THE ANNONACEAE FAMILY PLANTSABSTRACT-The use of plants compounds for the control of insects has increased worldwide. This occurs because the vegetal insecticides contains biodegradable compounds, nontoxic products and potentially suitable for use in pest control. Plants of the family Annonaceae are standing out as biopesticides because they are bioactive naturally in addition to presenting cytotoxic activity, antitumor, vermifuge, antimicrobial, immunosuppressive, anti-emetic, inhibiting appetite, antimalarial and also insecticide. The insecticidal activity of Annonaceae is due to the presence of acetogenins, substances that act on mitochondria inhibiting the NADH -ubiquinone oxidoreductase, causing the death of insects. In this review we report the use of Annonaceae in insect control, showing that so far, only 42 species of Annonaceae have information insecticidal activity against just over 60 species of insect pests. This information shows that much research is still needed, especially to get to know the insecticidal activity of other Annonaceae species, in addition to its effects on insect pests not yet studied. So we will have as an alternative to sustainable development, new vegetal insecticides such as those obtained from different Annonaceae species, which can act as an additional tool to balance the excesses of agriculture chemical or conventional.
Tibraca limbativentris to is an important rice pest and occurs in all rice-growing regions of Latin America. The control this insect is accomplished with synthetic chemical insecticides, however, new approaches are needed to reduce risks to the environment, to the natural enemies and also to avoid the onset of insecticides resistance. This study was designed to assess the toxicity of essential oils (EOs) from leaves of Piper aduncum, P. gaudichaudianum, P. malacophyllum, P. marginatum and P. tuberculatum (Piperaceae) on rice stalk stink bug eggs, T. limbativentris. Essential oils were extracted with steam distillation and dilutions were made for bioassays at concentrations of 0.25; 0.5; 1.0; 2.0 and 4.0%. Essential oils from all species of Piperaceae displayed ovicidal activity. The LC 50 values indicated that both younger and older eggs were susceptible to these oils. Ovicidal activity is related to the potential toxicity of several compounds, especially dilapiolle, myristicin, cubebene, α-guaiene, longifolene, prezizane, spathulenol, sabinene and δ-2-carene. Thus, EOs tested showed promising results for use as biorational botanical insecticides. Index terms: Piper aduncum; Piper gaudichaudianum; Piper malacophyllum; Piper marginatum; Piper tuberculatum.
ABSTRACT. The toxicities of essential oils (EOs) from 18 species of Brazilian Piperaceae were assessed on eggs of the velvetbean caterpillar, Anticarsia gemmatalis. Oils were extracted using steam distillation, and dilutions were made for bioassays at concentrations of 0.25, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0%. All EOs reduced larval hatching. The lowest lethal concentrations were obtained from Piper fuligineum (SP), Piper mollicomum "chemotype 1" (SP), Piper mosenii (PR), Piper aduncum (PA) and Piper marginatum (PA). Ovicidal activity is related to the potential toxicity of several compounds, especially dilapiolle, myristicin, asaricine, spathulenol and piperitone. According to our results, EOs from 16 Brazilian Piper species have potential for use as biorational botanical insecticides.
We observed individuals of Odontostilbe pequira, a small characid, approaching and biting individuals of larger-bodied fishes of other species. This observation was made in two clear water headwater streams of the Cuiabá basin, Paraguay River system, located in Nobres, Mato Grosso State, Brazil, which led us to investigate the behavioral interactions of these fish. We characterized behavioral interactions between species by direct underwater observations using snorkelling and video recordings. Additionally, we proceeded diet analyses of O. pequira, obtaining intestinal coefficient and the index of alimentary importance. During underwater observations we checked the relative frequency of attacks by O. pequira on larger fish species. Odontostilbe pequira attacked individually or in large groups, and the anostomid Leporinus friderici was the preferred target prey species, while Prochilodus lineatus was apparently avoided. Our study sustains that O. pequira is omnivorous, with a diet that varies seasonally. It feeds mainly on plants, but also on animal prey, including the scales of small fishes, and, possibly, the mucus and epidermis of larger fish species. We suggest the term "mutilating predation" to describe the latter relationship.
This study reports for the first time the occurrence of Gonatopus flavipes Olmi, 1984 in Pará State, Brazil. Specimes were collected on upland rice crops of Cambará variety in Novo Progresso (7°07'45.71"S 55°23'21.13"W). A sampling of insects with pitfall traps was conducted between November 2010 and March 2011. Specimens of G. flavipes were identified, illustrated and deposited in the Entomological Collection of the Department of Zoology, Federal University of Paraná, Curitiba, Brazil (DZUP/UFPR). This record indicates that rice crops may represent important habitats for this species.

The resistance of pests to insecticides and the high costs of pest control have prompted a search for less harmful alternatives to the environment. Phytoinsecticides can be a promising option in the control of pests. The insecticidal properties of the essential oil of Piper aduncum L. (Piperaceae) have been demonstrated by several authors. This study was aimed at evaluating the insecticidal activity of P. aduncum essential oil on caterpillars of the soybean looper, Chrysodeixis includens Walker. Two bioassays were conducted: The first was based on the ingestion of treated leaves, while the second, on direct contact. Chromatography was performed, and the resulting oil was used to treat larvae fed cotton leaves at the concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, and 8.0%. The controls consisted of water and acetone. The first assessment was carried out 24 h after the application. The main compounds identified by chromatography were dillapiole, myristicin, and Z-carpacin. In the ingestion bioassay, mortality reached 90% for the highest concentration in the first 24 h after application. For the topical application of P. aduncum essential oil, no significant differences were observed until the end of the life cycle of C. includens. This study demonstrates the insecticidal activity essential oil of P. aduncum on C. includens and its potential in the control of this insect by ingestion.
