RESUMOEvaluation of performance and carcass yield in four broiler chicken lineages in two system of rearing ABSTRACT -The objective of this work was to evaluate performance and carcass and dressing yields of four broiler chicken lineages raised in confined and semi-confined systems. It was used 1,440 chicks distributed in a random block design with a 4 × 2 factorial scheme, composed of lineage types (Ross 308, Máster Griss, Label Rouge and Vermelhão Pesado) and two production systems (confinement and semi-confinement), each one with four replications with 45 birds. At 84 days of age, four birds of each repetition were slaughtered, totaling 128 birds, for evaluation of carcass and dressing yields. Access to the paddock (semi-confinement) did not affect performance neither the yield of the carcass of the lineages, except abdominal fat yield, which was the lowest in the semi-confined birds. Considering only birds of colonial lineage, Máster Griss and Vermelhão Pesado showed the best results for weight and Label Rouge, the best feed intake. Broilers of Master Griss, Label Rouge and Vermelhão Pesado, compared to the Ross commercial lineage, showed the highest dressing yield, except for breast and breast meat, which were the highest in Ross lineage. Choice of lineage must be done accordingly to the market interest, since there are differences on performance and yield of dressing and carcass. SUMMARYThe experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of supplementing glutamine and nucleotides on growth performance and development intestinal morphology in broiler chicks. In the trial, 600 male broiler chicks distributed in randomized blocks in a 3x2 factorial arrangement (consisting of a uniform basal diet supplemented with: 0.0, 0.5 or 1.0% glutamine, and 0.0 or 0.04% nucleotides), for a total of 6 treatments with 25 birds each. Means of performance (weight, weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion and mortality) were obtained 7, 21 and 42 days of age. At the end of the experiment 4 broilers per treatment were used to determine organs weight and development intestinal morphology. Glutamine supplementation (1%) improved the body weight, feed intake and feed conversion in the first week. Glutamine and nucleotides supplementation did not affect performance in broiler chicks in the period one to 21 and one to 42 days of age. In conclusion, it was demonstrated that feeding 1.0% glutamine improved growth performance of broiler birds at 21 days of age. Palavras-chave: exercício, fibra muscular, frangos de corte, linhagem, semiconfinamento Morphology of skeletal muscle fibers of different broiler chicken strains bred in confined and semi-confined systems ABSTRACT -The effect of strain, breeding system and sex on body weight, carcass and leg yield, and morphologic aspects of skeletal muscle fibers of flexor hallucis longus muscle of broiler chickens was evaluated in this study. The experiment consisted of a 4x2x2 factorial arrangement of treatments, with four strains (Ross-308, Naked Neck Label Rouge, Caipirinha and Paraiso Pedrês), two breeding systems (confinement and semi-confinement) and two sexes, with two replicates per treatment, considering each bird selected randomly at 56 days of age an experimental unit, with a total of 64 birds. Ross strain had the highest values of body weight, weights of legs and meat of legs and weight of flexor hallucis longus muscle and highest values of carcass yield and meat of leg yield. The higher muscle mass of birds selected for high growth is related to an increase in the area of the three types of muscle fibers evaluated (SO, FOG and FG). Males presented higher muscle mass and a musculature higher in fast-glycolityc-type fibers than females. Semi-confined system modified the composition of skeletal muscle fibers of males, increasing the oxidative-type fibers. However this effect was not observed in females.Key Words: broiler chickens, exercise, muscle fiber, semi-confined, strain IntroduçãoA carne de frango, seguindo a tendência mundial, tem sido largamente consumida no Brasil. Powdered garlic in the alternative feeding of broiler chickensAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the inclusion of powered garlic (Allium Sativum) in diets of broiler chickens and the effect of this inclusion on the performance, carcass yield and parts, organ weights, serum cholesterol and triacilglycerols levels, as well as intestinal morphometry. Seven hundred and twenty male Cobb chicks one-day-old were distributed in randomized blocks with six treatments: diet without growth promoter and without anticoccidial (GP+AC) and with 0.00, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1.00% of powered garlic, and diet with GP+AC, with four replications of 30 chickens each. Chickens were reared up to 42 days old. Weight, weight gain, feed intake, feed conversion and mortality were obtained at 21 and 42 days. At the 42 nd , 20 chickens per treatment were slaughtered in order to determine carcass yield and other 4 chickens per treatment were used to estimate organ weights and intestinal morphology. Blood of 8 chickens per treatment was collected to determine cholesterol and triacilglycerols. For the birds feeding on the diet without growth promoter and without anticoccidial, the inclusion up to 1.00% of powered garlic in the diet improved feed conversion and did not alter carcass yield and parts, organ weights, intestinal mucous or influenced the serum levels of cholesterol and triacilglycerols. The garlic did not replace efficiently the antibiotic.
Silagem de grãos úmidos de milho em ração de frangos de corte 1021Silagem de grãos úmidos de milho em substituição ao milho seco da ração de frangos de corte criados em dois sistemas High moisture corn grains silage in substitution of diet dry corn to broilers bred in two systemsAbstract -The aim of this work was to evaluate the inclusion of high moisture corn grains silage, in substitution of dry corn, in diets of broilers bred in conventional and alternative systems. One-day old male Cobb chicks (720) were distributed in randomized blocks, according to a 2x3 factorial consisting of two systems (conventional and alternative), and three levels of silage (0%, 30% and 60%), with four replications per treatment. Means of weight, weight gain, ration consumption, feed conversion, production factor and mortality were obtained in 21, 42 and 49 days old broilers. In the final of the experiment 28 chickens per treatment were used to determine carcass yield, cuts and abdominal fat. The inclusion in diet until 60% of humid grain corn silage, in substitution of dry corn, decreased the ration cost, without affecting performance (in 21, 42 and 49 days old) and carcass yield of broilers (49 days). In alternative breeding system, independently of inclusion level of high moisture corn grains silage, performance was lower, however the economic return was higher.

Electrophoresis technique identified the presence of three myosin heavy chain types: MyHC-I, MyHC-IIa and MyHC-IIb, in the flexor hallucis longus muscle of the broilers. There was increase in MyHC-II and decrease in MyHC-I, as age passed.Only at 84 days-old was the MyHC-II expression influenced by strain, confirming a response of selection in Ross lineage on a more glycolytic muscle. The Ross lineage has higher live weight, leg weight, weight and area of the flexor hallucis longus, compared to different chicken strains. The aim of this study was to assess whether the inclusion of low amounts of ingredients such as wheat bran, corn gluten and yeast in the diet of laying hens can interfere with the traceability of meat and bone meal (MBM) in eggs and its fractions (albumen and yolk). We used 256 laying hens distributed across eight treatment groups, which consisted of a diet based on corn-soybean-wheat (CSW) bran meal and other diets that had additions comprising gluten and/or (MBM) and/or yeast. To analyse the isotopic ratios ( 13 C: 12 C and 15 N: 14 N), on the 28 th and 56 th days, 16 eggs were randomly taken for each treatment (four for each repetition), where eight eggs (two for each repetition) were used to harvest yolk and albumen samples and the remaining eight (two for each repetition) were used to analyse the whole egg. We concluded that detection of 2.0% MBM in the egg and its fractions is possible; however, the results for treatments containing gluten and yeast were not different from those containing MBM.
