Objective: This work sought to understand the role of spirituality in the lives of families with a loved one in end-oflife situation. Materials and Methods: This qualitative research was conducted through semi-structured interviews with 15 relatives of patients with serious diseases cared for in the primary health care network in São Paulo, Brazil. The data were organized and analyzed according to the methodological figures of the Collective Subject Discourse technique. Results: Spirituality represents a unique role for the families, as it helps to give meaning to life experiences, above all those directly involved with disease and death. However, they find no space to express those issues with the health professionals, with whom they should have a bond and co-responsibility for care based on integrality. Discussion and Conclusions: These families recognize spirituality as a strengthening element against difficulties confronted with the illness, but strongly depend on the health staff's availability to increase their experience.
EditorialSuicide among children and adolescents: a warning to accomplish a global imperative E very year, worldwide, over 800,000 people commit suicide, i.e., one death every 40 second. is is second leading cause of death among those aged 15 to 29 years. Considering the relevance of this problem, the World Health Organization had established as a global imperative the suicide prevention, and countries should consider suicide prevention as a high priority health care program. is program goal is to reduce suicide rates up to 10% by 2020. (1) e goal of this editorial is to be an alert as this deadline is approaching and because recent data have pointed out an opposite direction regarding the accomplishment of this global imperative, especially concerning Brazilian children and adolescent population.A study conducted in large Brazilian cities showed that suicide rate among adolescents increased by 24% between 2006 and 2015.(2) A total of 48,204 suicide attempts was registered in Brazil between 2011 to 2016. ese occurrences a ected 25.9% of women and 19.6% of men, considering only those aged 10 to 19 years. (3) e suicidal behavior involves events, throughout a sequence, which has as an intention to cause self-injury that will end up in death, including suicide ideation (without speci c plan or intention), suicide attempt, and suicide. e suicide ideation is prior to other events and, for this reason, it can be considered an important indicative of risk for suicide. is is related to someone's thinking of wishing to die by taken his/her own life, (4) not necessarily followed-up by preparation behavior. e younger the individual the lower this linear sequence of planning-ideation, especially for the own components related with human development. In case of children, the ideation can be less speci c and without planning due to own concept linked to death in this age range, which is even more limited among younger children. On the other hand, the impulsivity commonly in adolescence can be also contrary to suicide ideation with plan to bring about his/her own death.Suicide attempt is related to actions that lead to someone's own death, but with non-fatal outcome. ese actions could have been abandoned, fail or interrupted (4) and they constitute the most important risk factor that, at this time, is de ned as self-provoked violence, intentionally, that lead an individual to end with his/her own life.
Objective: Understand the beliefs, knowledge, and actions of nursing technicians on breastfeeding as a form of non-pharmacological intervention to relieve pain in newborns and infants during immunization. Methods: Qualitative study carried out through semi-structured interviews with nine nursing technicians from three Basic Health Units in a city in the state of São Paulo. The theoretical approach of the Belief Model and the methodological framework of Thematic Analysis supported this study. Results: Three themes originated: Beliefs, Knowledge, and Actions of nursing technicians. Final considerations: Despite knowledge about the benefits of breastfeeding as the most effective method for relieving pain in newborns and infants during vaccination, their restrictive beliefs overrode the evidence, leading them to act in ways that discourage or prevent the mother from breastfeed during vaccination. Formal training is recommended to align with current evidence-based practices.
