Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between emotional labour (EL) strategies and employees’ performance by considering the role of emotional intelligence (EI) as a moderator. Design/methodology/approach This study focused on the administrative staff of International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) who deal with students and guests from different countries. A total of 186 valid questionnaires were gathered from administrative staff selected using random sampling. Structural equation modelling was used to test the hypotheses of this study. Findings The results showed significant relationships of EL strategies with administrative staff performance. Furthermore, moderation analyses revealed that EI moderates the relationships between EL strategies and staff performance. Originality/value The study extends the current research on the effects of EL strategies on work performance and tests the moderating role of EI in these relationships in higher learning institutions. Moreover, it examines the performance of EL strategies and EI in cross-cultural context.
Purpose-This study examines the attitude of academic staff in one higher education institution in Malaysia towards the implementation of total quality management principles, and how that affects the intention to implement total quality management in the university. It also highlights the impacts of several demographic variables on the implementation of total quality management in the university.Design/methodology/approach-The study used survey data drawn from 149 academic staff selected using stratified random sampling techniques. Regression analysis was used to ISSN 2162-3058 2016 analyse data. International Journal of Human Resource StudiesFinding-The findings demonstrate there is a positive significant correlation between attitude toward TQM implementation (customers and stakeholders, employee engagement and teamwork, continuous improvements and total degree of attitude) and the intention to practice TQM among sampled institution faculties. Concerning the correlation between the subjective norms and intention, the analysis manifests that there is no significant correlation between the subjective norms of TQM and the intention to practice TQM principles among institutional staff. Furthermore, the study also found that there are no significant differences in the attitude towards implementation of total quality management principles due to the variables of gender, nationality, marital status, work experiences, the faculty and job positions with the exception of academic degree, where significant differences are shown.Value/originality-Since the study reports the understanding of academic staff of a higher education institution toward the implementation of total quality management principles, top management in the tertiary sector may find the findings and conclusions useful when planning for the implementation of total quality management principles.
This study aims to explore factors that influence attitudes towards implementing TQM among the academic staff in one of the Malaysian higher education institutions. A total of 270 questionnaires were distributed among academic staff at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), and a total of 209 questionnaires were completed. The method that best fits with the objective of this research is exploratory factor analysis. The results showed that three factors influenced the attitude of the IIUM academic staff on the execution of TQM principles. The findings of this research may stimulate other institutions to apply TQM principles in education and how TQM can be implemented in higher education. Senior-level management should take the opportunity to work together with the academic staff to boost the learning process by providing them with a platform to voice their points of view and suggestions. This paper contributes to the TQM literature and provides an important insight into current knowledge. The findings allow for implications to be made for both top management and policymakers. Such studies are needed to increase awareness and examine TQM's applicability in higher education.
