The gender digital divide between teens from seven countries in Europe, in Australia, and in countries of South America through a socio-cultural perspective is analyzed. The article compares which habits of use and consumption are attributed and performed by adolescents in multiple media and social media, and explores if these uses are grounded in the historically established gender roles. The data come from the Transmedia literacy research project (2015-2018) that had two main objectives: to explore what are teens doing with media and how have they learned to do it. An ethnographic approach was used, combining various research methods as questionnaires, interviews and participant observation, among others. In this article we focus on the analysis of the questionnaire implemented to map teens’ habits of use and consumption (N=1,520). To respond to the objective of the article, a descriptive univariate and bivariate analysis was carried out. The results show that the digital gender divide still exists and it takes shape through the persistence of gender stereotypes and roles associated to men and women and their relationship with media such as videogames practices (associated with boys) and the creation of stories (associated with girls).
Palabras clave: Charlie Hebdo; semiótica; análisis de contenido; Francia; Argelia.[en] The narratives of Charlie Hebdo's attack. A cross-national study of the news coverage Abstract. This study proposes an analysis of the front pages in the coverage of the attack on Charlie Hebdo in major newspapers in France, USA, Sweden, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Algeria. We applied a mixed methodology that combines quantitative/qualitative content analysis, semiotic analysis and frame-inductive analysis. The results show significant differences between countries in terms of formal coverage, presence and distribution of text and image. In addition, we found two great narrative programs. The Algerian, claiming the innocence of the Muslim community and blames Western and Arab political leaders. And the French, with a program alluding to social empowerment and government support to defend freedom of speech. As the general conclusion, the widely shared story was the French's Western-imposed over the Algerian-Arabic narrative.
This paper analyzes several Spanish TV news about sexuality, gender, religion and interculturality to explore how these news are interpreted by audiences and experts. Methodology. We have used three complementary methods. First, we have conducted a critical discourse analysis (CDA) of different sexual, religious and intercultural identities portrayed by the TV news. We have also analyzed how audiences interpret these news through focus groups. Finally, we have used a delphi method to analyze the interpretation of TV experts. Results and Discussion. The CDA illustrated common stereotypes identified by audiences and experts. Conclusions. Audiences and experts were very critical with TV news and perceived the limitations and stereotypes portrayed. However, older audiences used the same stereotypes demonstrated in the focus groups. In general, this study shows that when receivers interpret sensitive issues, they trend to accept or reject media discourses, letting little space for the negotiation of meanings.
