RESUMO Ingestive behaviour of Moxoto and Caninde goats fed diets with two energy levels in feedlotABSTRACT -In this work, it was evaluated the ingestive behavior of indigenous goats from the northeastern semiarid region, kept in feedlot. Forty castrated males, 20 from Moxotó and 20 from Caninde breeds, with average initial weight of 15.22 kg ± 1.78 kg, were used. The goats were distributed in a completely randomized design in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement with two breeds and two diets. Two experimental diets were evaluated: diet with lower energy level (2.2 Mcal ME/kg dry matter (DM)) formulated with 70:30 roughage:concentrate ratio;and another diet with higher energy level, (2.7 Mcal ME/kg DM) and roughage:concentrate ratio of 35:65. For ingestive behavior, observations were carried out at every five minutes for 24 hours to determine time spent on intake, rumination and idle. Dry matter intake, number of ruminated boli and ruminating chews per day, time of ruminating chews per boli, urinary frequency and frequency of search for water and water intake significantly differed among breeds. Moxoto breed animals showed higher urinary frequency and lower frequency for search for water during the day. However, when Moxoto animals received the diet with 2.7 Mcal ME/kg DM, they excreted less urine. Moxoto and Caninde goats are very selective with greater preference for small particles of the diets, regardless to its energy level. Supply of diets with high level of energy improves feed and rumination efficiency of Moxoto and Caninde goats in feedlot.
In vivo and carcass measurements were evaluated to predict carcass physical and chemical composition and to list the measurements that best fit the prediction of the composition of growing Santa Inês sheep carcasses. Thirty-three animals were used to measure the loin eye area by ultrasound in vivo (LEAu) and in the carcass. We used 39 animals for biometric measurement in vivo and 42 sheep for morphometric measurement in the carcass. For the physical and chemical compositions of carcasses, dissection of the half left carcass was carried out in 42 animals. The data were submitted to Pearson’s correlation analysis and t test. Simple and multiple linear regressions were performed using a stepwise procedure. All correlations between in vivo measurements and the physical and chemical compositions of carcasses (in kg) were significant, except for LEAu. Biometric measurements and hot (HCW) and cold (CCW) carcass weights were considered as predictors of the carcasses’ physical and chemical compositions. Slaughter body weight (SBW) was the variable that most influenced the equations in the assessment of in vivo measurements and HCW and CCW most influenced the equations for measurements on carcasses. Biometric measurements of Santa Inês sheep can be used together with the SBW to estimate the physical and chemical compositions of carcasses, with emphasis on body compactness index, breast width, wither height, and croup height. The morphometric measurements can be used together with carcass weight to estimate the physical and chemical compositions of carcasses, with emphasis on croup width, carcass compactness index, croup perimeter, external and internal carcass lengths, chest width, and leg length and perimeter. The HCW can be used to predict the physical and chemical composition of carcasses without affecting the accuracy of the prediction model.
Crude glycerin is a byproduct of the biodiesel industry and has been widely used in ruminant diets as a source of energy, usually in place of corn, primarily during periods of drought in tropical regions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of including levels of the crude glycerin of low purity (0, 6, 12 and 18%) replacing corn in the diets of goats on the carcass characteristics, tissue composition, meat cuts yield and physicochemical parameters of meat. Forty males castrated without defi ned racial pattern goats an initial average weight of 19.70 ± 2.30 kg were slaughtered after 86 days. Diets content 0 and 6% crude glycerin promoted similar responses to the analyzed variables, except for pH and breast weight. No differences were observed to total digestible nutrients, slaughter body weight, commercial cut yield leg tissue composition and physicochemical parameters of meat. Crude glycerin can be included up to 12% without losses on carcass weight and meat cuts, leg composition, and meat quality. The inclusion of crude glycerin containing 63.06% glycerol and 45.57% lipids could be effective in partial replacement of corn in diets for confi ned goats in tropical areas.
-Castrated male goats (n = 40) of the Moxotó (n = 20) and Canindé (n = 20) breeds with an average weight of 15.3 kg were studied to determine intake, nutrient digestibility and weight gain for two diets with different energy levels.The experiment utilized a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement (two breeds and two diets), in which goats were randomly allocated.A diet of low energy density and a forage:concentrate ratio of 70:30 was utilized along with a diet of high energy density and a forage:concentrate ratio of 35:64. To determine the nutrient intake and digestibility, at the end of the experiment, goats were kept in metabolism cages for a period of 15 days. Weighing of the goats was conducted weekly over a period of 90 days.The goats that were fed a diet of high energy density displayed significantly increased consumption of metabolic fractions, with the exception of dry matter and neutral detergent fiber, when compared with those fed a diet of low energy density. The lack of difference in dry matter and neutral detergent fiber intake indicated that goats have a high digestive capacity for the diet containing a greater quantity of Maniçoba hay. Weight gain was significantly greater for those on the diet of greater energy density. Among the breeds, Canindé goats recorded the highest average consumption and weight gain. Coefficients of digestibility were significantly greater for the more energy dense diet, with no difference between breeds. Regardless of diet, the Canindé breed shows greater weight gain than the Moxotó breed.
ObjectiveThe aim of the study was to evaluate the efficiency of the Hankins and Howe (HH46), Valadares Filho (V06), and Marcondes (M12) equations for predicting the physical and chemical composition of dairy crossbred bulls carcasses, as well as the chemical composition of their empty bodies.MethodsThis study was conducted using 30 dairy crossbred bulls. One group of five animals was slaughtered at the beginning of the experiment, and the remaining were slaughtered 112 days later. Animals were distributed in a completely randomized design into treatments consisting different levels of concentrate (0%, 17%, 34%, 51%, and 68%). The physical and chemical compositions of the cattle were obtained from the right half of the carcass and using samples taken between the 9th and 11th ribs of the left half of the carcass. The estimated and experimentally determined values were compared using the correlation and concordance coefficient, as well as the mean square error of prediction (MSEP) and its components.ResultsThe HH46 equations were better at estimating the amount of muscle plus fat in the carcass. The amount of bone in the carcasses could not be well estimated by the HH46 and M12 models. The M12, HH46, and V06 equations were worst at estimating the amounts of protein, ether extract, and water in the carcass, respectively. In the empty body, the amounts of protein and water were well estimated by the HH46 equations. Protein, ether extract, and water were accurately estimated by the V06 equations, and ether extract by the M12 equations.ConclusionThe physical and chemical composition of dairy crossbred bull carcasses, as well as the chemical composition of their empty bodies, can be predicted using the equations tested here. The amount of bone in these carcasses could not be accurately predicted.
RESUMO Objetivou-se com este estudo avaliar os efeitos da substituição total do farelo de soja por milho e ureia sobre consumo e digestibilidade aparente da matéria seca, perfil metabólico proteico e balanço de nitrogênio de vacas mestiças em lactação em pastejo, com lotação intermitente de capim-mombaça (Panicum maximum). Foram utilizadas 12 vacas mestiças em lactação, com peso corporal médio inicial de 473,0+45,0kg, período de lactação médio de 95,0+42,2 dias e produção de leite de média inicial de 14,1+1,9kg/dia. As vacas eram primíparas e multíparas, mestiças de Girolando, Pardo-Suíço e Jersey. Os tratamentos consistiram em quatro níveis de substituição do farelo de soja por milho e ureia (0; 33; 66; 100% na matéria seca - MS). O capim-mombaça apresentou teor médio de proteína bruta e fibra em detergente neutro de 19 e 59% na MS, respectivamente. A substituição do farelo de soja por milho e ureia não alterou o consumo e a digestibilidade aparente da MS. As concentrações de ureia e N-ureico plasmáticos foram alteradas pela substituição do farelo de soja por milho e ureia. O balanço de nitrogênio foi positivo e não foi alterado com as substituições. Para vacas mestiças produzindo, em média, 12,5kg/dia e mantidas em pasto de qualidade, pode se substituir totalmente o farelo de soja por milho e ureia.
