Dietary maltodextrin levels for piglets weaned at 21 daysABSTRACT. The goal of this experiment was to find the best level of substitution of maltodextrin for lactose for pre-starter and starter rations, whether simple or complex, fed to piglets weaned at 21 days. One hundred and twenty piglets were used in a randomized block design, according to a 2 x 4 factorial (two diet types: simple or complex; and four levels of maltodextrin as a replacement for lactose: 0.0, 33.5, 66.5 and 100%). The daily feed intake (DFI), daily weight gain (DWG) and feed conversion (FC) were measured. No interaction between maltodextrin levels and diet type was observed. The piglets fed the complex diets showed higher DWG from 0 to 15 days post-weaning; better FC. No effect of maltodextrin levels on DWG and DFI was observed from 0 to 15 days or from 0 to 30 days; and FC from 0 to 15 days. Maltodextrin showed a quadratic effect (p = 0.006, Ŷ = 1.53 + 0.002287X + 0.000022X 2 ) on FC from 0 to 30 days. Diets containing only maltodextrin in it composition provided the lowest cost of feed. The maltodextrin can fully replace lactose in diets, not affecting the performance of piglets weaned at 21 days. Keywords: performance, weaning, lactose, swine.
USE OF SWEETENER AS A PALATABILITY IN DIETS OF WEANED PIGLETSABSTRACT: This study aimed to determine the effects of adding a sweetener based upon Stevia rebaudiana as palatability in diets of weaned piglets evaluating performance (average daily gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio) and diarrhea occurrence. Seventy-two piglets were used from a homogeneous strain (Large White x Landrace) weaned at 23 days of age, weighing an average of 7.60 ± 0.90 kg. The animals in groups of two (barrow and female) were housed in elevated metal pens. The performance of piglets was assessed in period I (23 to 37 days of age), period II (37 to 51 days of age), period III (51 to 65 days of age), and total period (23 to 65 days of age). The treatments were: 0.0% inclusion of the sweetener, 0.125% inclusion of the sweetener, 0.250% inclusion of the sweetener, 0.500% inclusion of the sweetener. Since these inclusion levels were used in periods I and II, period III the inclusions of the sweetener were reduced by 50%, or 0.00, 0.0625, 0.125 and 0.250%, respectively. There were no cases of severe diarrhea in the first 15 days of tes...
AbstractThis study aimed to evaluate the effects of replacing dried milk (DM) for micronized soybean (MS) and micronized soybean and enzyme b-mannanase (MSE) on animal performance and economic analysis. Thirty six male piglets, weaned 21 days of age, with an average initial weight of 6.41 ± 0.52 kg, were used in randomized blocks with three treatments and twelve replicates. The diets were divided into three phases: 0 to 14 days, 14 to 28 days and 28-42 days of the experimental period. For performance, the daily feed intake (DFI), daily weight gain (DWG) and feed conversion (FC) were evaluated. It also evaluated the economic viability. During 0-14 days, MS differed (P<005) from MSE to DFI, DM differed (P<0.05) from MS to DWG and FC. In 14-28 days there was a difference (P<0.05) among DM and other treatments for DWG. In phase 28-42 days, there was no difference (P>0.05) among treatments. Considering all the parameters in the total experimental period (0 to 42 days), the DWG was higher (P<0.05) for DM and MSE compared to MS, and FC was lower (P<0.05) for DM compared to the others. In economic evaluation replacing DM by MS and MSE decreased cost. It is concluded that the substitution of dried milk by micronized soybeans with adding the enzyme is possible, considering the period of 42 days post weaning. The enzime b-mannanase with micronized soybean improves the performance of post weaning piglets in 0-14 days post weaning. Economically, the use of micronized soybean...
