Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal degenerative motor neuron disorder of which the progression is influenced by several disease-modifying factors. Here, we investigated ELP3, a subunit of the elongator complex that modifies tRNA wobble uridines, as one of such ALS disease modifiers. ELP3 attenuated the axonopathy of a mutant SOD1, as well as of a mutant C9orf72 ALS zebrafish model. Furthermore, the expression of ELP3 in the SOD1G93A mouse extended the survival and attenuated the denervation in this model. Depletion of ELP3 in vitro reduced the modified tRNA wobble uridine mcm5s2U and increased abundance of insoluble mutant SOD1, which was reverted by exogenous ELP3 expression. Interestingly, the expression of ELP3 in the motor cortex of ALS patients was reduced and correlated with mcm5s2U levels. Our results demonstrate that ELP3 is a modifier of ALS and suggest a link between tRNA modification and neurodegeneration.

Dynamics of host:dye complexation have been used, as an alternative to displacement assays, for determination of additional host:guest stability constants. Requirement of this new methodology is host:guest complexation being much faster than host:dye in order to guaranty that host:guest system is in equilibrium at each time during dye inclusion into the host cavity. Methodology was tested by studying α‐CD:surfactant complexation using alkyltrimethylammonium surfactants with different alkyl chain length. Experimental results confirm the formation of 1:1 α‐CD:surfactant complexes with binding constants strongly dependent on the surfactant hydrophobicity.
Pastures occupy a large part of Brazilian national territory, being of heterogeneous characteristics and varying in climate, fertility, and management. Water erosion, generated by the action of rainfall, is a principal source of soil depletion. These soils exhibit distinct behaviors spatially and temporally. Therefore, this research aims to evaluate the water and soil losses in a pasture of the Cerrado region during two periods of the year (winter and summer) with the aim of understanding the hydro-geomorphological dynamic of the pastures in question. A rainfall simulator was calibrated at 64.34 mm/h, to replicate similar intensities to those of the study region, for 30 minutes (32.17 mm) over four erosion plots. Overall, the plots presented low water and sediment losses, with the largest runoff volumes in the summer and the highest erosion rates in winter. These results are connected to seasonal climate variations expressed in the region, which are reflected in the plant growth habits, generating alterations in the structural quality of the pastures. It follows that the return of the rainy season (winter-summer transition) represents a critical phase for the triggering of the erosive process.
Peptic ulcers are not the most common complication in gastrointestinal mucosa, but these defects stand out as being the complication with the highest mortality rate. Several scoring systems based on clinical and biochemical parameters, such as the Boey and PULP scoring system have been developed to predict the probability of mortality. In this study, a data mining process is performed in the medical data available, in order to evaluate how the scoring systems perform when trying to predict mortality and patients' state complication. Furthermore, the presented paper studies the two scoring systems presented to define which one outperforms the other. On one hand PULP scoring allows a better mortality prediction achieving, above a 90% accuracy. One the other hand, regarding complications, the Boey system achieves better results leading to a better prediction when it comes to predicting patients' state complication.
