We investigated the occurrence of infectious pathogens during an outbreak of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) in a beef cattle feedlot in southern Brazil that has a high risk of developing BRD. Nasopharyngeal swabs were randomly collected from steers ( n = 23) and assessed for the presence of infectious agents of BRD by PCR and/or RT-PCR assays. These included: Histophilus somni, Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, Mycoplasma bovis, bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV), bovine coronavirus (BCoV), bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), bovine alphaherpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1), and bovine parainfluenza virus 3 (BPIV-3). Pulmonary sections of one steer that died with clinical BRD were submitted for pathology and molecular testing. The frequencies of the pathogens identified from the nasopharyngeal swabs were: H. somni 39% (9 of 23), BRSV 35% (8 of 23), BCoV 22% (5 of 23), and M. haemolytica 13% (3 of 23). PCR or RT-PCR assays did not identify P. multocida, M. bovis, BoHV-1, BVDV, or BPIV-3 from the nasopharyngeal swabs. Single and concomitant associations of infectious agents of BRD were identified. Fibrinous bronchopneumonia was diagnosed in one steer that died; samples were positive for H. somni and M. haemolytica by PCR. H. somni, BRSV, and BCoV are important disease pathogens of BRD in feedlot cattle in Brazil, but H. somni and BCoV are probably under-reported.
The Araguari River is located in the central uplands of Brazil. Over the past 40 years, the region has undergone considerable change in its economy because of the green revolution and urban development that followed the construction of Brasilia in the 1960s, the new capital of Brazil. The main changes in the landscape were the construction of two hydroelectric power plants across the main valley, resulting iñ 95 per cent loss in the natural features of the lower 200 km of the Araguari course. The inundation of the river valley has dramatically modified the landscape, with submersion of many locations, especially gorges, islands as well as tributary valleys and historic sites. The concept of geodiversity implies that abiotic elements of nature have unique qualities that are not uniformly distributed and include geomorphic, geologic and pedologic qualities within the context of their location. The concept of geodiversity is used to understand and assess losses from the Araguari River Valley landscapes. In this research, we present the total quantity of geosite types occurring for our Araguari River Valley study site. Twelve complex sites were identified, with six transformed to simple geosites because of inundation associated with formation of two reservoirs. The major changes caused by river impoundment resulted in a reduction in the richness of geosites and a reduction in their complexity by 50 per cent. The study results find that 14.3 per cent of the original geodiversity was lost after valley inundation. Quantification of changes in geodiversity is essential to comprehensively characterize the environmental impact of dams.
This paper outlines the main geomorphological characteristics of the Araguari River Basin and describes the human-induced changes to the landscapes. This region, naturally occupied by savannas, has been strongly altered by human activities over the previous 40 years. Summarised information is derived from geomorphological, geological and pedological maps, supported by field work. The paper is divided into two main parts. The first shows the natural arrangement of the landscapes in the hydrographic basin, demonstrating the relationships between structural and geomorphic units. Information about superficial materials and current processes and some observations on the evolution of these landforms are presented here. The second part describes the changes in the basin due to anthropic activities, considering types of erosion, channel changes and urban problems. These activities are divided between rural and urban areas, showing the differences between the operations of these sensitive systems. The paper also notes the main research in progress in this basin, presents some partial results and comments on future perspectives.
