Introduction: This study aimed to explore pharmacy students' and faculty members' perception of online learning at the Faculty of Pharmacy Universitas Andalas. Methods: A survey was administered to 522 undergraduate students, 140 pharmacist professional students, and 51 faculty members via an online electronic survey (Google Forms). Demographic data, online learning experiences, and online learning acceptance of students and faculty members were collected through the survey. Results: Five hundred forty-five students and 36 faculty members of the Faculty of Pharmacy Universitas Andalas participated in this study. Online learning was mostly delivered using Zoom, combined with other media (47.3%). The majority of faculty members and students agreed that online learning could achieve knowledge learning outcomes (LOs), but not attitude LOs and skills LOs. More than a half of students and faculty members perceived that online learning is less effective. Conclusion: In general, the faculty members and students perceived that online learning was not very effective and only considered to achieve some aspects of LOs. As the COVID-19 pandemic is not over yet, it seems that online learning is the reasonable option for conducting learning activities. However, the learning activities and media should be carefully selected to ensure the achievement of all aspects of LOs.
This case study aims to explore the utilisation of Google Forms as a tool for online formative assessment for the Pharmacotherapy of Infectious Diseases, Immune System, and Cancer (FAF 323) courses at Andalas University, Indonesia. The online formative assessment was conducted to assess students’ progress after completing four online modules (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Drug Hypersensitivity Reaction, Tuberculosis, and Oral Candidiasis). Five questions were designed for each module, which made 20 questions in total. The Google Forms quiz was designed to provide the students with the scores, correct answers, and the feedback directly after submission. The use of Google Forms for online formative assessment purposes is beneficial and practical, although the department only used it once throughout the practice sessions. For optimum benefit, the formative assessment should be completed multiple times throughout the course, so that the lecturers can obtain information about students’ progress through several checkpoints.
Background: Indonesian pharmacy schools are expected to meet required clinical pharmacy components and the proportion of practical courses according to nationally established standards. This is essential to produce competent Indonesian pharmacists. The implementation of Pharmacotherapy of Gastrointestinal, Respiratory Tract Diseases, and Special Conditions Practice was one of the measures taken to meet this requirement. This case study aims to explore obstacles in Pharmacotherapy of Gastrointestinal, Respiratory Tract Diseases, and Special Conditions Practice.Case discussion: Pharmacotherapy of Gastrointestinal, Respiratory Tract Diseases, and Special Conditions (FAF 314) Practice was conducted using group case study with SOAP (subjective, objective, assessment, plan) worksheet. During the sixth week of practice, a modified OSCE was conducted to assess the learning process. The skills that were assessed included problem identification, problem-solving, drug information service, effective communication, as well as attitude and professionalism. However, the students’ average score in this assessment was about 1-2 of maximum score 3, and the required passing score was 2. Conclusion: The sub-optimal students’ achievement in the mid-term assessment of Pharmacotherapy of Gastrointestinal, Respiratory Tract Diseases, and Special Conditions Practice may be due to the students’ obstacles in understanding the information from literature and showing effective communication skills and professional attitude in drug information provision. To address these issues, further measures such as constructive alignment analysis of this practice, revising practice activities design and allocating adequate time to practice effective communication skills and professional attitude in drug information provision.
The COVID-19 pandemic has become a public health problem at the global level. University students are expected to have positive knowledge, attitudes, and practice towards COVID-19, not only for themselves but also for their community. A pre-post study was conducted on undergraduate students at Universitas Andalas, Indonesia, in 2020 to explore the impact of an educational poster on university students’ knowledge, attitude, and practice towards COVID-19. An amount of 407 students participated in this study. Most of the participants were female (N=308; 75.68%), aged 20 years and above (N=251; 61.67%), and were non-health professional students (N=337; 82.80%). Female students had significantly better knowledge, while female and health sciences students had better preventive practice related to COVID-19. After the intervention, only attitude scores significantly differ from the pre-intervention score (p=0.004). However, the proportion of participants who had poorer practice was higher than the pre-intervention, although the number of participants who had practice improvement also increased. The educational leaflet significantly improves students’ attitudes, but not their knowledge and practice. Careful design of the educational method is needed to improve university students’ knowledge, attitude, and practice.
