Es hat allerdings lange Zeit gebraucht, bis das Metall in die Technik zur Verbesserung des Stahls eingefiihrt, wurde; sind doch von der Entdeckung des Wolframs bis zu seiner ersten technischen Verwertung nicht weniger als 80 Jahre verflossen! ,,Es scheint, als ob die Industrie sich nicht an einen Xorper wagte, der der Wissenschaft noch manches Ratsel aufzulosen gab", schreibt Dr. JULIUS PHILIPP in einem kleinen Aufsatz iiber ,,Wolfram" in der von Dr. A. W. HOFMANN heausgegebenen ,,Chemischen Industrie". Einmal ins Leben getreten, entwickelte sich jedoch die junge Industrie sehr rasch: auf der Londoner Ausstellung im Jahre 1862 war sie, obgleich erst einige Jahre alt, schon stark vertreten. Man verwendete Natriumwolframat als Ersatz fur das Pinksalz in der Farberei, sowie als Mittel, Gewebe unentzundbar zu machen. Grofse Hoffnungen setzte man auf einige Verbindungen in ihrer Anwendung als Farben. I n Betracht lrommen hier Wolframsame, blaues Wolframoxyd, die Wolframate von Barium, Chrom, Kupfer, Nickel und Kobalt und vor allem die grofse Zahl von Wolframbronzen. Da diese Farben trotz ihrer Schonheit und ihres verhaltnismalsig billigen Preises wenig Verbreitung gefunden haben, so konnten alle diese Substanzen eine grofsere Bedeutung nicht erlangen. Am wichtigsten ist die Verwendung des Metalls als Zusatzmittel in der Eisenindustrie. Das Wolfram legiert sich leicht mit Eisen und verleiht demselben besonders wertvolle Eigenschaften. KOLLER machte als erster auf die grolse Harte und E'estigkeit des Wolframstahls aufmerk-Sam. Grolsere Untersuchungen uber Eigenschaften und Darstellung dieser Eisensorte machten besonders LE G U E N~ und CARON..~ Danach zeichnet sich der Wolframstahl durch grolsere Festigkeit und Elastizitat aus und eignet sich besonders gut zur Herstellung von Kanonenrohren. Unter den Problemen, welche die anorganischen Chemiker von heute am meisten beschaftigen, steht die Nutzbarmachung des atmospharischen Stickstoffs fur landwirtschaftliche und industrielle Zwecke an erster Stelle. Ein Blick in die neuere Literatur, insbesondere die Patentliteratur, zeigt, mit welcher Energie an der Losung dieser wissenschaftlich hochinteressanten, von volkswirtschaftlichen Gesichtspunkten aus betrachtet, ungemein wichtigen Aufgabe gearbeitet wird, deren endgiiltige Losung eine Kulturtat im eigensten flinne des Wortes bedeuten wurde. Das Problem der Bindung des Luftstickstoffs wurde bekanntlich nach verschiedenen Richtungen hin und teilweise mit Erfolg versucht. I n erster Linie ist es die Oxydation des Stickstoffs bei moglichst hohen Temperaturea zum Zwecke der Bildung des Stickoxyds und der Salpetersaure bzw. des Salpeters. Dieses zuerst von MUTHMANN und HOFER~ wissenschaftlich aufgeklarte Oebiet ist technisch von BIRKELAND und EYDE und spiiter durch die Badische Anilin-und Sodafabrik sowie verschiedene andere Unternehmungen in die Praxis umgesetzt worden. Ein anderer Weg zur Erreichung des vorgesteckten Zieles ist gekennzeichnet durch die Herstellung des Calciumcyanamids durch FRANK und CARO. Fernerhin ist es die fiberfiihrung des Stickstoffs in Ammoniak und Nit'ride, mit welcher sich eine grofse Zahl von Verfahren beschaftigt. Technisch ist dieses Ziel, bis jetzt wenigstens, nur dadurch zu erreichen gewesen, d& der Stickstoff an geeignete Metalle und Metalloide in der Hitze gebunden wird und die erhaltenen Nitride mit Wasser oder anderen geeigneten Substanzen zersetzt werd en. Die Anzahl der Korper, welche imstande sind, elementaren l Ber. dewtsch. chem. Ges. 36 (1903), 438. 39 --Stickstoff zu binden, ist nicht grofs, die Zahl derjenigen, die bei einer wirtschaftlichen Losung dieser Frage in Betracht kommen, eine verschwindend kleine. Eines der Elemente, deren Fahigkeit , sich mit elementarem Stickstoff zu verbinden, man schon verhaltnismafsig friih entdeckte, ist das Silicium. Es waren DEVILLE und WOHLER,' welche 1859 diese merkwiirdige Eigenschaft des Siliciums zuerst erkannten, die damals urn so mehr iiberraschen mufste, a19 man glaubte, dak das krystallisierte Silicium sich nicht mit Sauerstoff direkt verbinde. DEVILLE und WOHLER erhitzten krystallisiertes Silicium , das sich in einern in Kohlepulver eingebetteten hessischen Tiegel befand, eine Stunde lang im heftigsten Koksfeuer. Nach dem Erkalten fanden sie ,,das Silicium grofstenteils in eine lockere, blauliche Masse verwandelt, bedeckt mit einer leicht ablikbaren, zusammenhangenden, faserigen , dem Bergkork ahnlichen Substanz. Letztere war weirs, nur an der Oberflache dunkel gefarbt". Unter dem Mikroskop erkannten sie, ,,dafs diese Farbe von zahllosen dunkel-tomback-farbenen Krystallen herriihrte , aufsitzend auf Warzen einer weifsen, feinkrystallisierten Substanz". Woraus diese metallglanzenden Krystalle bestanden, konnten DEVILLE und WOHLER nicht ermitteln. Mit Atzkali geschmolzen, entwickelte sowohl die korkart...
Zur elektrometrischen Titration werden die Anfangs‐ und Endstoffe einer Lösung in geeigneter Weise zu einer Konzentrationskette geschaltet und die Klemmenspannung derselben im Verlauf der Titration mit einem Millivoltmeter verfolgt. Der Titrationsendpunkt zeigt sich dann sehr scharf durch das Verschwinden der Klemmenspannung an.
von 5 g Zirkonerde mit 1.1 g Bor im Kohleschiffchen im elektrischen Ofen bei Anwendung eines Stromes von 650 Amp. und 120 Volt entstand eine clunkle, porose , scheinbar nicht vollstandig durchgeschmolzene Masse. Bei langerem Erhitzen des Zirkondioxyd-Borgemisches rnit Hilfe eines Stromes von 800 Amp. bildete sich eine grauschwarze metallisch aussehende Schmelze. Das Produkt enthielt neben 30°/, Kohle ca. 5 8 O / , Zirkon und erwies sich als ein Zirkoniumcarbid. Mit uberschussigem Silicium entstand bei Anwendung eines Stromes von 700-800 Amp. eine metallisch glgnzende Schmelze, die bei langerem Erhitzen im elektrischen Ofen in dunklen charakteristischen Krystallen sublimierte und jedenfalls Zirkoniumsilicid war. Sogenanntes ,,krystallisiertes Zirkonium" (ZrAl,) erhielt WEDE-KIND 1 beim Erhitzen fein pulverisierten Kaliumzirkonfluorids mit einem Uberschusse von gekorntem Aluminium im elektrischen Ofen (5-6 Minuten bei 90-100 Amp. und 30-35 Volt). Beim Losen des Aluminiums blieb glanzendes blattrig krystallisiertes ZrAI, zuruck. Durch Schmelzen dieses Produktes im elektrischen Strom zwischen Platinelektroden konnte man dasselbe in Zr,Al, umwandeln. Aluminium ist also infolge seiner Neigung, sich mit dern Zirkonium zu vereinigen, zur Darstellung des letzteren aus Kaliumzirkonfluorid nicht ohne weiteres geeignet. Magnesium scheint eine solche Verbindungsfahigkeit rnit Zirkonium nicht zu besitzen, denn als dieses in Form kurzer, dunner Stabchen mit dem Doppelsalz vermischt, im elektrischen Ofen wahrend 5-6 Minuten mit Stromen von 90-100 Amp. erhitzt wurde, fand sich im Tiegel eine zum Teil kompakte Masse, aus welcher das uberschussige Magnesium mjt. Salzsaure ausgezogen werden konnte. Sie erwies sich als fast ebenso bestaudig wie das Aluminiumzirkonid, hatte aber ein ganz anderes Aussehen. Das so gewonnene Zirkonium enthielt 94.12 Metall. Schliefslich sei noch erwahnt , dals E. WEDEKIND zahlreiche Versuche anstellte , um das Element durch Schmelzelektrolyse des Kaliumzirkonfluorids darzustellen. 1)as an der Kathode ausgeschiedene Metall war aber nie Itrystallisiert, sondern amorph und mit den Zersetzungsprodukten des Doppelsalzes verunreinigt. Es konnte davon nicht vollig befreit werden und wurde als ein dunkelgraues ziemlich leicht oxydables Pulver erhalten. Dieses Verfahren kommt iibrigens im Prinzip auf das BER-
