Dieses Buch sei dem Andenken an den Altmeister der deutschen Mikrophotographie, August Köhler, gewidmet, der seit dem Jahre 1900 bis zu seinem Ende als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter bei earl Zeiß in Jena tätig war. Schon 1893 erarbeitete er die Grundlagen für die rationelle Beleuchtung in der Mikrophotographie und Mikroskopie. 1904 veröffentlichte er die ersten Geräte und Methoden zur Mikrophotographie mit ultraviolettem Licht, an deren Weiterentwicklung er bis zuletzt unermüdlich tätig war. Durch mannigfaltige Anregungen förderte er die Entwicklung des Mikroskops und seiner Nebenapparate, insbesondere aber die Mikroskopoptik.
