Ceftaroline fosamil demonstrated high clinical cure and microbiological success rates, was efficacious against cSSSIs caused by MRSA and other common cSSSI pathogens and was generally well tolerated. Monotherapy with ceftaroline fosamil has the potential to provide an alternative treatment for cSSSIs.

Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is considered as the gold standard diagnostic test for the diagnosis of thyroid nodules. It is a cost-effective procedure that provides specific diagnosis rapidly with minimal complications. It plays an important role in the determination of treatment- patients with suspected malignancy diagnosis can be subjected to surgery. On the other hand it can decrease the rate of unnecessary surgeries. Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the correlation, accuracy of fine needle aspirational cytology (FNAC) in the diagnosis of thyroid lesions with the final histopathologic diagnosis in the surgical specimens. Materials and Methods: In our study we have performed a retrospective analysis of a case series of patients who were admitted to the Department of Endocrine, General and Oncological Surgery of Hospital of M. Kopernik in Łodź (Poland) between May 2016 and December 2017 and underwent FNAC with subsequent surgery. Cytological diagnosis was classified into six Bethesda categories. Results: On cytological examination 1070/1262 were reported as benign, 49 malignant and 143 suspicious. On histopathological examination, 956/1070 cases were confirmed as benign but there were 114 discordant cases. Among the other cases histopathology diagnosis of malignancy matched in 45/49 and 128/143 cases.The sensitivity and specificity were 60,28% and 98,05% respectively. False positive rate was 1.95% and false negative rate was 39.72%. The positive predictive value was 90.1% and negative predictive value was 89.35%. Accuracy of FNA in differentiating benign from malignant thyroid lesions was 89,46%. Conclusions: Fine needle aspiration cytology is a simple, cost-effective and popular procedure for the diagnosis of thyroid cancer. It is recommended as the first line investigation for the diagnosis of thyroid lessions.

Background: The groin hernia is a significant social and economic problem of our times. The pathogenesis of the disease is not clear. The metalloproteinases (MMP) are the group of proteolytic enzymes responsible for the degradation of extracellular matrix proteins and the basic membrane of blood vessels. The aims of our study were: (1) to estimate the MMP-2 levels in the blood and tissues of patients with a groin hernia; (2) to answer the question of whether changes in MMP-2 activity correlate with the occurrence of inguinal hernias. Method: The study was performed on a group of 90 male patients suffering from inguinal hernias, aged 28–70 years (mean: 49 years). The control group was made up of 10 healthy (free from hernia) males, aged 30–68 years (mean: 46 years). Results: We noticed increased levels of MMP-2 in patients with all types of hernia and across all age groups. The MMP-2 mean serum levels were statistically higher in patients with a groin hernia when compared to the control group. The highest blood levels of MMP-2 were observed in young men with a direct hernia. Conclusions: This study confirmed the important role of MMP-2 in the pathogenesis of inguinal hernia. The increased activity may lead to dysfunctions in collagen fiber, which is responsible for forming fascial structures, and as a result weaken their durability.

The patients with inguinal hernia have a statistically significant increase in serum levels of MMP-2. Our finding of the MMP-2 and TIMP-2 distinctly higher in the patients suffering from recurrence of direct inguinal hernia (reflecting a previous surgical failure) may suggest the theory that the extracellular matrix defect lies at the basis of this disorder.
