We investigate the transmission properties of Fabry–Pérot microcavities made of metal mirrors containing the organic dye molecule, generally called Lemke. We synthesized Lemke dye and fabricated the microcavities by using simple vacuum evaporation and spin-coating methods. The vacuum Rabi splitting energy increases in proportion to the square root of the absorption coefficient of the cavity layers and exceeds 1 eV at maximum. The ratio of the vacuum Rabi splitting energy to the matter transition energy reaches 0.42, so we consider that the ultrastrong-coupling regime was attained. The dispersion relation is reasonably interpreted by using the full Hopfield Hamiltonian.

Abstract. The present paper develops linear regression models based on singular value decomposition (SVD) with the aim of downscaling atmospheric variables statistically to estimate average rainfall in the Chikugo River Basin, Kyushu Island, southern Japan, on a 12-hour basis. Models were designed to take only significantly correlated areas into account in the downscaling procedure. By using particularly precipitable water in combination with wind speeds at 850 hPa, correlation coefficients between observed and estimated precipitation exceeding 0.8 were reached. The correlations exhibited a seasonal variation with higher values during autumn and winter than during spring and summer. The SVD analysis preceding the model development highlighted three important features of the rainfall regime in southern Japan: (1) the so-called Bai-u front which is responsible for the majority of summer rainfall, (2) the strong circulation pattern associated with autumn rainfall, and (3) the strong influence of orographic lifting creating a pronounced east-west gradient across Kyushu Island. Results confirm the feasibility of establishing meaningful statistical relationships between atmospheric state and basin rainfall even at time scales of less than one day. An artificial seeding experiment was carried out over the Genkai Sea, Japan, using liquid carbon dioxide. The seeded cloud was followed by an aircraft and radar at Kyushu University. A radar-echo intensity of 19 dBZ was formed in the seeded cloud where no radar echo was observed previously. The results of the experiment are analyzed using a numerical model [Weather Research and Forecasting Model (WRF), version 3.1] to evaluate the effects of the artificial seeding. The numerically simulated radar echo has a slightly stronger intensity and wider area than that observed. The results of the experiments were similar to those produced by the numerical model, however. Evaporation of cloud liquid water; growth of snow particles that is due to deposition, autoconversion, aggregation, and collection; and convection caused by released latent heat are shown in the numerical results as effects of the seeding experiment. The falling snow particles cause downward flow, which is compensated for by upward flow that causes the formation of new cloud liquid water as a secondary effect of seeding, although this secondary effect is confirmed only in the numerical results.
