The separation between church and state (e.g., public education) is contentious. Furthermore, schools and many professional school counselors (PSCs) may choose to disregard and/or discount spirituality. This article (a) presents the importance of spirituality in counseling, (b) explores legal statutes and ethical standards relating to spirituality as a component of multiculturalism and professional school counseling, and (c) offers steps and strategies to support the ethical practice of PSCs. A case example and implications are discussed.
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) is a group of connective tissue disorders associated with defective production of collagen, which can dramatically reduce musculoskeletal functioning by symptoms of joint laxity and frequent dislocations eventually leading to disability. Respondents to an on-line survey reported having to seek out confirmation of their EDS diagnosis with multiple physicians, which implies the difficulty many people with EDS face when trying to gain access to appropriate treatment. Participants with EDS reported the most helpful methods for managing acute pain were opioids, surgical interventions, splints and braces, heat therapy, nerve blocks and physical therapy, while chronic pain was treated most effectively with opioids, heat therapy, splints or braces and surgical interventions.
Due to the increasing presence of clients who speak a language other than English, educators and supervisors will need to address bilingual training issues in mental health service provision. Supervision that utilizes the preferred language of the client is an effective way to support growth in bilingual trainees, but there is little scholarly literature describing best practices or approaches to this complex task. We describe our experiences with bilingual supervision in Spanish (from both trainee and supervisor points of view) and provide resources and suggestions to encourage other supervisory dyads to attempt bilingual service provision.
Graduate students and new faculty in counselor education are often required to contribute scholarly works. However, graduate schools do not always provide appropriate preparation in scholarly writing. This article outlines the basic components of a scholarly manuscript or paper, identifies prevalent writing errors, and offers suggestions for how counselor educators can teach and mentor new faculty and their students.
