Highly porous N-doped activated carbon monoliths (ACMs) are fabricated by carbonization and physical activation of mesoporous polyacrylonitrile (PAN) monoliths in the presence of CO(2). The monoliths exhibit exceptionally high CO(2) uptake; 5.14 mmol g(-1) at ambient pressure and temperature and 11.51 mmol g(-1) at ambient pressure and 273 K.
According to our data, troglitazone appears to promote fat accumulation in the subcutaneous adipose tissue rather than in the visceral adipose tissue in mildly obese Japanese people with type 2 diabetes. This shift of energy accumulation from the visceral to subcutaneous adipose tissue may greatly contribute to the troglitazone-mediated amelioration of insulin resistance.
Mesoporous polyacrylonitrile (PAN) monolith has been fabricated by a template-free approach using the unique affinity of PAN towards a water/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) mixture. A newly developed Thermally Induced Phase Separation Technique (TIPS) has been used to obtain the polymer monoliths and their microstructures have been controlled by optimizing the concentration and cooling temperature.
Abbreviations & AcronymsObjectives: To determine the effect of surgical varicocele repair in improving testicular Leydig cell function as shown by increased testosterone production. Methods: Eligible studies were searched in Medline and the Pubmed database, and cross-referenced as of 31 May 2011 using the terms "varicocele," "testosterone" and "surgery." The database search, quality assessment and data extraction were independently carried out by two reviewers. Only studies including patients with testosterone evaluation before and after surgery were considered for the analysis. A systematic review and meta-analysis was carried out for continues variables using random effect models. Results: Out of 125 studies, a total of nine were selected , including 814 patients. The combined analysis showed that mean serum testosterone levels after surgical treatment increased by 97.48 ng/dL (95% confidence interval 43.73-151.22, P = 0.0004) compared with preoperative levels. Conclusions: Surgical treatment of varicocele significantly increases testosterone production and improves testicular Leydig cell function.
Abstract-We present an experienced-based planning framework called Thunder that learns to reduce computation time required to solve high-dimensional planning problems in varying environments. The approach is especially suited for large configuration spaces that include many invariant constraints, such as those found with whole body humanoid motion planning. Experiences are generated using probabilistic sampling and stored in a sparse roadmap spanner (SPARS), which provides asymptotically near-optimal coverage of the configuration space, making storing, retrieving, and repairing past experiences very efficient with respect to memory and time. The Thunder framework improves upon past experiencebased planners by storing experiences in a graph rather than in individual paths, eliminating redundant information, providing more opportunities for path reuse, and providing a theoretical limit to the size of the experience graph. These properties also lead to improved handling of dynamically changing environments, reasoning about optimal paths, and reducing query resolution time. The approach is demonstrated on a 30 degrees of freedom humanoid robot and compared with the Lightning framework, an experience-based planner that uses individual paths to store past experiences. In environments with variable obstacles and stability constraints, experiments show that Thunder is on average an order of magnitude faster than Lightning and planning from scratch. Thunder also uses 98.8% less memory to store its experiences after 10,000 trials when compared to Lightning. Our framework is implemented and freely available in the Open Motion Planning Library.
Varicocele is currently the most common irregularity identified in males that is associated with impaired spermatogenesis. It primarily presents in the form of decreased sperm count and motility, abnormal morphology, and significantly increased sperm DNA fragmentation. Several studies have shown that surgical repair improves semen parameters and increases the odds of spontaneous pregnancy. However the exact effect of surgical repair treatment remains controversial. Therefore, the aim of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness of microsurgical repair by comparing common semen parameters and sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI). We evaluated infertile men (n = 19) who underwent microsurgical subinguinal varicocelectomy for treatment of clinical varicocele before and 3 months after surgery. Normozoospermic men (n = 19) were considered as the normal control group. Semen parameters improved significantly after surgery when compared with that before surgery, but still significant differences with the normal control group were observed. In comparison, sperm DNA integrity improved significantly after surgery (percentage DFI decreased from 28.4 ± 15.6% before surgery to 22.4 ± 12.9%, at 3 months post surgery) to similar levels as the normal control group. These results suggest that microsurgical repair may be considered as a treatment option in infertile men with palpable varicocele.
We studied the formation of substrate-supported planar phospholipid bilayers (SPBs) on glass and silica from mixtures of long- and short-chain phospholipids to assess the effects of detergent additives on SPB formation. 1,2-Hexyanoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DHPC-C6) and 1,2-heptanoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DHPC-C7) were chosen as short-chain phospholipids. 1-Palmitoyl-2-oleol-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC) was used as a model long-chain phospholipid. Kinetic studies by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) showed that the presence of short-chain phospholipids significantly accelerated the formation of SPBs. Rapid rinsing with a buffer solution did not change the adsorbed mass on the surface if POPC/DHPC-C6 mixtures were used below the critical micelle concentration (cmc) of DHPC-C6, indicating that an SPB composed of POPC molecules remained on the surface. Fluorescence microscopy observation showed homogeneous SPBs, and the fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP) measurements gave a diffusion coefficient comparable to that for SPBs formed from POPC vesicles. However, mixtures of POPC/DHPC-C7 resulted in a smaller mass of lipid adsorption on the substrate. FRAP measurements also yielded significantly smaller diffusion coefficients, suggesting the presence of defects. The different behaviors for DHPC-C6 and DHPC-C7 point to the dual roles of detergents to enhance the formation of SPBs and to destabilize them, depending on their structures and aggregation properties.
