The aim of this study is to investigate the possible use of ILs as solvents for two separation problems frequently encountered in petroleum industry: {aromatic sulfur compound þ aliphatic hydrocarbon} or {nitrogen compound þ aliphatic hydrocarbon}. This work is focused on three ILs: 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium thiocyanate, 1,3-dimethylimidazolium methylphosphonate, and tris-(2-hydroxyethyl)-methylammonium-methylsulfate. In the first part of this article, a study of new three ternary systems is studied in view of defining the capacity of proposed ILs as solvents for extraction of sulfur and nitrogen containing organic compounds from aliphatic hydrocarbons. Therefore, LLE measurements of ternary mixtures for five systems were measured at 298.15 K and at atmospheric pressure:The second section of this article presents results of extraction of synthetic fuelsmodel gasoline and model diesel by the use of selected ILs. The influence of extraction time or temperature as well as three stepped procedure using each time a fresh portion of ILs on the final fuel contamination was investigated.

The aim of this study is to investigate the possible use of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([BMIM][OTf]) as solvent for three separation tasks which appear in deep desulfurization of fuels: {aromatic sulfur compound + aliphatic hydrocarbon}, {nitrogen compound + aliphatic hydrocarbon}, or {sulfur compound + aliphatic hydrocarbon}. New three ternary systems are studied to investigate the capacity and selectivity of [BMIM][OTf] for extraction of sulfur and nitrogen containing aromatic organic compounds from aliphatic hydrocarbons. Aromatic hydrocarbon capture, which often appears causing unwanted reduction of fuel octane number, is also investigated. Therefore, LLE measurements of ternary mixtures for three systems are presented: {thiophene + n-heptane + [BMIM][OTf]}, {pyridine + n-heptane + [BMIM][OTf]}, {benzene + n-heptane + [BMIM][OTf]}, and {thiophene + n-heptane + [BMIM][OTf]} at 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure. The liquid−liquid equilibrium (LLE) data are correlated by the use of the NRTL model. Moreover, the extraction experiments of synthetic fuelsmodel gasoline and model diesel using [BMIM][OTf]have been performed. The influence of three stepped extraction procedure using each time a fresh portion of [BMIM][OTf] on the final gasoline and diesel compositions is presented.

We measured macroscopic viscosity as well as nanoviscosity experienced by molecular probes diffusing in solutions containing two polymer species vastly differing in the molecular weight. On this basis we postulated a scaling equation for viscosity of complex liquids characterized by two distinct length-scales. As an experimental model, we used aqueous solutions of low-polydispersity poly(ethylene glycol) and poly(ethylene oxide) with molecular weight ranging from 6 to 1000 kg/mol, polymer concentrations from 0.25% up to 50%, and viscosity up to 500 mPa•s. The proposed model distinguishes between the contributions to the total viscosity stemming from the mesoscopic structure of the complex liquid and from the magnitude of interactions dictated by the chemical nature of its constituents. It allows to predict diffusion rates of nanoscaled probes in polymer solution mixtures and can be adapted to various multilength-scale complex systems.

Chemotherapy is a primary treatment for the metastatic lung cancer patients. To select the most effective combination of drugs, we need an efficient way of assessing tumor response. Here, we showed that differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis of blood serum proteins could reveal the patient response to the treatment. If chemotherapy is effective, serum proteins DSC curve of non-small cellular lung cancer (NSCLC) case is similar to the those of the healthy individuals. If treatment fails, notable changes occur in the DSC profile of NSCLC patient’s blood serum. Our preliminary work illustrates how thermal analysis of changes in the heat capacity of blood serum proteins can provide an insight into patient response to chemotherapy – the essential information for any successive lung cancer treatment.
