Deep Fuels Desulfurization and Denitrogenation Using 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium Trifluoromethanesulfonate

Abstract: The aim of this study is to investigate the possible use of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([BMIM][OTf]) as solvent for three separation tasks which appear in deep desulfurization of fuels: {aromatic sulfur compound + aliphatic hydrocarbon}, {nitrogen compound + aliphatic hydrocarbon}, or {sulfur compound + aliphatic hydrocarbon}. New three ternary systems are studied to investigate the capacity and selectivity of [BMIM][OTf] for extraction of sulfur and nitrogen containing aromatic orga… Show more

“…These kinds of liquids can be used as extractor or good efficiency for the extraction of organic compounds and also are good oxidative agents [28][29][30][31]. The [bmim]PF 6 has proper structure as a good extractor.…”

“…Based on these results the gasliquid partition coefficients, K L , and basic thermodynamic functions such as partial molar excess Gibbs energy DG E;1 1 , enthalpies DH E;1 1 and entropies DS E;1 1 at infinite dilution were determined. Ionic liquids are considered as extractants in separation of sulfur compounds from fuels [1][2][3], therefore the selectivities and capacities at infinite dilution for alkanes/thiophene extraction problems were calculated and compared to other ILs based on the same [FAP] À anion [4][5][6][7][8][9]. Additionally results were compared to ionic liquid based on the same cation with bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)-amide, [NTf 2 ] À anion [10].…”

“…However, due to the designable properties of ILs, different combinations of cations and anions will lead to numerous ILs [9], which make it time consuming and inconvenient to study all the mechanisms through experimentation. Therefore, theoretical quantum chemical research has been conducted to interpret the mechanism of ILs extraction [10].…”
