BackgroundOver 30% of maternal deaths and 10% of infant deaths are avoidable if couples space out births at intervals of 2 years or greater. This study aimed to identify factors associated with contraceptive use in the postpartum period.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study among postpartum women living in Parakou. Participants were selected using a two-stage sampling method. Postpartum contraceptive use was defined as the use of at least one contraceptive method at the time of the survey. Independent variables included socio demographic and reproductive history. For the analysis we performed a multiple logistic regression and we calculated odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals.ResultsThe study included 453 postpartum women. Among the participants, 59 (13%) were using a contraceptive method. Injectable contraceptives were the most common method used (25.4%). Factors associated with contraceptive use in the postpartum period included history of contraceptive use (AOR=9.4; p<0.001), resumption of sexual intercourse (AOR=5.7; p<0.001), discussion with partner about contraceptive method (AOR=5.7; p=0.005), need of partner’s approval before adopting a contraceptive method (AOR=0.4; p=0.014) and counseling during pregnancy, in the delivery room, and during postnatal visits (AOR=2.7; p=0.019).ConclusionThe prevalence of contraceptive use during the postpartum period remains low. Interventions should be designed with a focus on the associated factors in order to increase postpartum contraceptive use in Parakou.
Introduction:The World Health Organization considers for many years obesity as a pandemic which affects as well the developed countries as the developing ones. The consequences of the overweight on the medical, gynaeco-obstetrical, and surgical plan are no longer demonstrating. Objective:The current paper aims to study the influence of the weight of the mother on the evolution of the pregnancy with the pregnant women in the town of Parakou. Material and methodologicalapproaches: It was about a descriptive transversal study for an analytical purpose with forecast data collection. It has been conducted on a period of six (06) months going from 23rd of February to 31st of August 2015 and had covered 272 pregnant women in the town of Parakou. The sampling probabilistic method has been used according to the survey technique. Results:The average age of the surveyed women was about 26, 1± 5, 8 years old with the extremes of 14 and 51 years old. The predominance of the overweight and the obesity with the pregnant women in Parakou was respectively about 34, 9% and 15, 8%. The diabetes pregnant woman, the exceeding of term and the macrosomy were statistically associated with obesity. The diabetes pregnant women, the exceeding of term, the resuscitation at birth were statistically associated with overweight. Conclusion: The fight against overweight is one of the great challenges of this century. It has some consequences on obstetrical plan. A planning of pregnancies with the patients of overweight would then permit a clear improvement of the undertaking of their social securitywithin the maternities and an improvement of the maternal, perinatal and neonatal indicators.
Introduction: Acute renal failure (ARF) post-operative is a specific form of acute deficiencies causing multiple declining factors. Objective: This survey aims to study the incidence and risk factors associated with acute renal failure (ARF) in post-operative surgical intensive care units to University Hospital of Borgou (UH-B): during 2015. Patients and Methods this study is a cross sectional, descriptive and analytical ones with the prospective data collection from March 1st to European Scientific Journal November 2016 edition vol.12, No.33 ISSN: 1857 -7881 (Print) e -ISSN 1857 189 August 31th, 2015. The research has involved all patients admitted to the operating room for surgery and motherhood whatever reason and then transferred respectively to the intensive care areas at UH-B. The postoperative ARF has been investigated inner patients following inclusion criteria and classification according to RIFLE score. The socio-demographic, clinical and biological variables monitoring, even support and evolution are experimented. A questionnaire is designed for data collection. Data are analyzed by Epi-Info means with 5% of significance level. Results: 130 patients are registered. The mean age is 27.68 ± 12.87 years. The sex ratio is 0.66. The frequency of post-operative ARF reaches 12.31%. The associated risk factors are: hypertension (p = 0.0018), diabetes (p = 0.002), heart failure (p = 0.0104), severe sepsis (p = 0.006) hypovolemic shock (p = 0.002), ASA class ≥ 3 (p = 0.0014), preeclampsia-eclampsia (p = 0.012), the Altémier class classification ≥ 3 (p = 0.0164), a pathological urinary sediment like a proteinuria (p=0.006), haematuria (p= 0.001) and nitrituria (p=0.007). Consequently, three (03) subjects out of sixteen (16) have died (18.75%). Conclusion:The post-operative ARF is a reality in University Hospital Borgou , with a higher mortality rate. Thus, the prevention strategy is the best treatment through the screening and monitoring promotion towards risk factors. er Mars au 31 Août 2015.
Students were familiar with and had easy access to the method. However, repeated use of this method highlights the need for better information of these students concerning classical methods of contraception. An awareness campaign should be conducted on the campus in order to reduce the currently high rate of non-medical clandestine abortion.
