We demonstrate IP-packet/10-Gbit-Ethernet transporting by novel 80-Gbit/s/port optical packet switch prototype with IP/OP converters, packet-transceiver of instantaneouslocking (<1 ns), and multiple-label-processor of ultra-fast processing (<100 ps) to achieve 7.2-Gbps IP-packet throughput with low packet-loss-rate (<10 -6 ).
IntroductionWhile 40 Gbps electronic routers are available, optical packet switching (OPS) is an essential technology toward over-40-Gbps packet-switched networks. Until now, we have demonstrated OPS systems up to 160 Gbps [1]. In order to deploy such high-speed system to real networks, we should seamlessly connect Internet technology and OPS technology. Recently, transmission of IP packets over optical packets up to 40 Gbps (e.g., 2.5 Gbps [2,3] and 40 Gbps [4]) has been achieved. In this paper, to connect IP networks with over-40-Gbps OPS networks with an effective way, we propose 80 (8λ x 10) Gbit/s/port OPS prototype and newly-developed interfaces between IP packets and optical packets (called as IP-OP and OP-IP converters) with an 8-channel array truly burst-mode packets transmitter/receiver at the ingress/egress node. In addition, we introduce wide colored optical packets by WDM technique [5] in order to increase the bandwidth of optical packets. Colored optical packets are forwarded by OPS prototype at core node. OPS prototype newly provides ultra-fast and multiple optical code (OC) label processing [6]. We achieve the transmission of 7.2 Gbps IP packets over OPS with a packet loss rate under 10 -6 via demonstrated system. Moreover, smooth Video-streaming of IP-based 3D high-definition television (HDTV) is demonstrated for one actual application.
