The polymerization of p‐xylylene was followed with a newly designed differential thermal analysis system at temperatures between −196°C and −20°C. It was found that at the lower temperatures the monomer condenses first to the crystalline monomer before simultaneous polymerization and crystallization. At the higher temperatures, polymerization and crystallization are successive. The data are in agreement with the morphology and crystal structure data derived in Part I of this series of papers on crystallization during polymerization of poly‐p‐xylylene.
I n order to determine the concentration of active centers, polymerizations are terminated by addition of sodium alkoxide. This yields alkoxy endgroups which after acid hydrolysis of the isolated and purified polymers are determined by gaschromatography of the produced alcohol.I n cationic polymerization of anhydrous formaldehyde a t -78 "C under certain reaction conditions a fast and quantitative initiation reaction and no kinetic chain termination have been observed. Presumably living polymers are obtained. The unexpected decrease in the rate of polymerization after a certain conversion is ascribed to hindrance of monomer diffusion in the crystalline polymer in which the active centers are imbedded.Cationic chainends have been detected in the 6oCo y-ray induced polymerization of crystalline trioxane. This proves a cationic mechanism of chain propagation in the radiation-induced polymerization of trioxane.I n polymerization of 1.3-dioxolane by HC104 a t 20°C a gradual but quantitative initiation reaction and no kinetic termination reaction have been observed. Termination by addition of alkoxide and determination of alkoxy endgroups also helped to distinguish between several different mechanisms of chain propagation proposed in the literature. It is assumed that the active center in dioxolane polymerization is a tertiary oxonium ion which propagates by an SN 2 reaction with monomer. The mechanism of radiation-induced polymerizations in the solid state has been a subject mostly open t o speculation. As radiation usually generates several kinds of active species (radicals and ions) it is difficult to find out, which of these actually cause.s polymerization. We have developped a method distinguishing between cationic and anionic active centers. Cationic polymerizations are terminated by addition of a base such as sodium alkoxide in a suitable solvent. The alkoxide is incorporated into the polymer as an endgroup. This endgoup is determined analytically after isolation and purification of the polymer. The incorporation of alkoxy endgroups into the polymer is a proof of the occurrence of polymer chains with cationic chain ends. It was shown by this method that crystalline trioxane, polymerized by y-rays at 6OoC, contains polyoxymethylene cations. It is assumed that with these cationic active centers propagation is similar to polymerizations initiated by LEWIS acids.Anionic chain ends can be detected by an analogous way. Polymerizations are terminated by addition of excess alkyl iodide which produces alkoxy endgroups from the anionic chain ends. Surprisingly, in the radiation-induced polymerization of crystalline trioxane some anionic chain ends were also found in the polymer. It is assumed that these anions do not propagate and that they are only counter-ions of the propagating cationic chain ends.
SUMMARY:The formation of trioxacycloheptane in cationic dioxolane polymerization, observed by MIKI, HIGASHIMURA and OKAMURA is found to be caused by traces of water. It is not to be ascribed to the backbiting reaction postulated by MIKI et al. Water causes chain transfer with formation of hemiacetalic hydroxyl end groups which cleave off formaldehyde. The latter together with dioxolane yields trioxacycloheptane. It is formed quickly in the beginning of the polymerization and then remains unchanged. Its concentration is proportional to the amount of water added to the polymerization run; this permits a convenient and sensitive method of water determination in dioxolane solutions.(4)
