Proteins can be crosslinked by chemical compounds without any accompanying change in the complicated three-dimensional structure. Many bifunctional reagents that can react with functional groups in the side chains of the amino acids are now known. Not only can the distance between the linked amino acid residues be deduced from the known length ofthe bridge introduced, but information can also be obtained concerning changes in conformation during other reactions and concerning the arrangement of the components of a quaternary structure.Angew.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
