Using rolereverse sentences, recent ERPs studies, in light of Semantic Illusion Theory, have challenged the assumption that syntactic-semantic processes are coupled. We ran two ERP experiments (active and passive voice) using event-related brain potentials (ERPs) in role-reversed sentences in three conditions, trying to reestablish a direct correspondence between syntax-first models and on-line sentence processing and relating them to new neurophysiological findings of two processing pathways, a ventral and a dorsal, the first for words and coordinated items and the second for hierarchical structures. We found evidence in favor of a syntax-first account. The N400 and P600 appear to be modulated by the subject-object asymmetry, reflecting, respectively, the merge of the internal argument with the verb and, the integration of the external argument.
Hierarchical or indirect recursion can be found in different domains of human language and thus, it has been claimed to be the only part of language that is specific to humans (Hauser, Chomsky, and Fitch 2002). However, in the past decade, both the claims that, recursion is the central component of the “narrow faculty of language” and that, it should be present in all languages have been the object of intense debate (cf. Pinker & Jackendoff, 2005; Everett, 2005). This debate triggered the exploration of new frontiers in the examination of embedded structures, which have been examined in acquisition and in processing and have been shown to be implemented through a wide array of linguistic resources in different languages. This paper presents an acoustic description and a neuro-psycholinguistic analysis (ERP/EEG) of an uncommon cognitive device to embed relative clauses. It is implemented in Karajá, a Macro-Je language spoken in Central Brazil, which uses pitch accent to signal relativization: (i) [tori do‟rode] „the white man arrived‟ versus (ii) [tori doro‟de] „the white man who arrived‟, first described in Ribeiro as stress shift (2006). The major interest in studying this phenomenon is because in Karajá, more than structuring envelopes for acts of speech, prosody codes directly onto the central syntactic algorithm of recursion. We found evidence in favor of a stronger facilitation to process a coordinated structure than a recursive structure. We found smaller RTs and amplitudes in the EEG related to the coordinated conditions versus the embedding conditions. Also, it seems that even though embedding is harder to launch, hierarchical structuring makes it easier to process in the third embedding, when comprehenders learn they are in an embedding mode. Coordination, on the other hand, being a default, is easier to launch, but it seems to become progressively harder as it does not benefit from hierarchical structuring.
In this paper we deepened on the processing of cleft role-reversed structures, based on empirical evidence of standard Brazilian Portuguese (BP). We used the electrophysiological technique (EEG/ERP) to map distinguished syntactic and semantic processes, for instance, the N400 and the P600, addressing the focus structures in It-clefts clauses structured in three different experimental conditions: (i) Congruous Cleft Condition: It was the SURFER that the shark attacked in Hawaii; (ii) Reversed Cleft Condition: It was the SHARK that the surfer attacked in Hawaii; and (iii) Incongruous Cleft Condition: It was the COUCH that the shark attacked in Hawaii. Taken together, our findings suggest that the presence of P600s related to role-reversed sentences in previous studies could be attributed to the syntactic reanalysis, instead of the processing of the role reversed item per se. Also, the presence of an N400 effect to the reversals could be due to the frustration of the strong combination of contextual constraints and strong lexical association. Our results make a unique contribution to the ERP response profiles, specially regarding the relationship between the role-reversals and the animacy violations in the Cleft structural frame. Our ERP findings seem to be compatible with the long-held assumption that the N400 and P600 appear to be modulated by the subject-object asymmetry, and were sensitive to, respectively, the semantic attraction between words in the sentences and, the congruency of the predicate. We thus claim that the syntactic anomalies blocked the detection of semantic anomalies, therefore, semantically incongruous sentences, such as role-reversals were perceived to be odd due to a syntactic constraint satisfaction that assigns the right theta-roles to the verbs arguments despite the semantic cues.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------O PROCESSAMENTO DE SENTENÇAS CLIVADAS NO PORTUGUÊS DO BRASIL: UM ESTUDO DE ERP DE CONSTITUINTES MOVIDOS PARA A ESQUERDA EM SENTENÇAS COM PAPEIS TEMÁTICOS REVERSOSNeste artigo nos profundamos no processamento de estruturas clivadas com argumentos reversos, com base nas evidências empíricas do Português Brasileiro (PB) padrão.

It has a negative amplitude peak at approximately 400ms after stimulus onset. It has been reported in the last 30 years in connection with the attempt of the verb to integrate its complement. It is also related to lexical access in general and to participants' response when incoming words do not match predictable candidates in online processing. This study focuses on the sensitivity of the N400 to early information from outside of the verb-complement scope, (contained in an adjunct in the left periphery of the sentence). Using supporting adjunct information as a condition, this study tries to unveil the sensitivity of the N400 to data that is not part of the core structure of the event. Our hypothesis is that the information in the adjunct position is not taken into account in the same time-frame of the event and, indeed, the analyses involving several pre-tests with varying SOAs, showed no difference in the N400 component for sentences with relevant adjunct information when compared to those with irrelevant adjunct information.
The semantic relationship between two separate words in the same semantic realm, e.g. vegetables, is often viewed as merely associative. Thus, if matched by frequency in a priming paradigm, a prime such as potato should help the activation of a target such as carrot, the same way that carrot may trigger the activation of potato. Direction is not expected to count here. Contrastingly, with words in a sentence there is hierarchical structure to which direction does count: Joan kissed Billy is different from Billy kissed Joan. This study aims at testing the hypothesis that the semantic relationship in a priming paradigm might be mediated by an unstated syntactic structure that pops up spontaneously during priming, making separate words behave very similarly to words in a phrase. Five conditions of word pairs were tested including two in which the words were identical, but prime and target were presented in opposite directions. If the hypothesis about syntactic mediation were right, there should be a difference between the N400 latencies of these two directionally * Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Doutoranda, E-mail: juliana.n.gomes@colorado.edu ** Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Doutora, Professora Associada, E-mail: aniela@gmail.com opposite conditions. In fact, ERP analysis revealed that direction did play a role in latency here attributed to structural factors. KEYWORDS: Priming. Directionality. Syntactic nesting. Direcionalidade. Seeking to decipher the process of understanding and producing language, Fedorenko reports three discoveries made by her laboratory during the last decade, achieved through behavioral, computational and brain imaging methodologies. First, Fedorenko proposes that regions that support the language are selective only to it. She then argues that regions that support syntactic processing are the same ones that support semantic processing. Finally, Fedorenko suggests that the primary driver for activation in the language region is semantic composition and not syntax, as the literature had been indicating: if a syntactically messed up input provides sufficient evidence for the semantic composition, the language network maximum response is achieved. Thus, syntactic properties could be constrained by communicative pressures. She concludes that, interpreted together, these results point to a strong integration between lexicon and syntax, approaching theoretical models such as construction and usage-based grammars.
