ABSTRACT Objectives:To check the prevalence of body dissatisfaction in college students of different majors, as well as the relationship with gender and nutritional status. Methods: The sample was composed of college students from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF) of several different majors. The Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) and the Silhouette Scale for Adults assessed body dissatisfaction. Self-referred body mass and height were used to calculate the body mass index (BMI). For the statistical analysis, association, comparison, and logistic regression tests were performed. Results: Among the 535 students, with average age of 20.82 ± 3.03 years old, 245 were male. The BSQ average score was 68.00 ± 28.74, being 88.9% of the subjects free from dissatisfaction. Nevertheless, according to the silhouette scale, 76.6% were found to be dissatisfied. The students of Life Sciences and Humanities were, insignificantly, more dissatisfied than the Exact Sciences students. Women, when compared to men (p < 0.05) and those overweight/obese (OR: 3.174; p = 0.000)
A rede privada representa 82,2% desse total e a rede pública federal, 17,8%. ABSTRACT:The aim of this study was to research the number of self-declared students with disabilities in the process of inclusion in public and private higher education institutions of Juiz de Fora. This theme merits investigation because of the policies implemented by the Federal Government Access to Higher Education that aim to increase the level of schooling for the population, i.e. ProUni, REUNI and FIES. Eleven higher education institutions of Juiz de Fora were surveyed, of which ten were private and one public. The interviewees were the supervisors of courses in which self-declared students with disabilities were enrolled, and attended regularly, at the time when data was collected. Subsequently, the interviews were analyzed by content analysis. The data showed that there are currently 45 students with disabilities enrolled who regularly attend classes in higher education courses in the city. The private institutions represent 82.2% of this total and the federal public university includes 17.8%. It is deemed greatly relevant to implement further studies that aim to increase information about the inclusion of people with disabilities in the Brazilian school system. This will enable better understanding of these students' process of facing difficulties, advocacy struggles and overcoming barriers until they achieve entrance into the university. This issue has been important in assisting professionals involved in advocacy for the rights of people with disabilities, especially regarding access to e...
ABSTRACTObjective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the body-checking, inappropriate eating attitudes and body dissatisfaction in undergraduate students from both sexes. Methods: Five hundred eighty-seven undergraduate students (311 men) were surveyed. The body-checking behaviours (women -Body Checking Questionnaire; men -Male Body Checking Questionnaire), inappropriate eating attitudes (Eating Attitudes Test-26) and body dissatisfaction (Body Shape Questionnaire) were evaluated. Body mass and height were self-referred to calculate the body mass index (BMI). Descriptive, inferential and qui-square test (Fisher exact test) statistics were performed using the Statistic 8.0 software and adopting significant level of 5%. Results: Body-checking behaviours are associated with inappropriate eating attitudes and body dissatisfaction in both sexes. Women and men showed differences between the varia-
The objective of this study was to analyze the relationship between depressive symptoms and eating disorders in female adolescents. The sample included 371 girls ranging from 12 to 16 years of age in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. The study used the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) and Major Depression Inventory (MDI) to evaluate eating disorders and depressive symptoms, respectively. The linear regression model showed that 18% of the EAT-26 scores were influenced by MDI (F(1, 370) = 14.18; p = 0.001). Moreover, the findings indicated a statistically significant association between depressive symptoms and eating disorders (χ2 = 14.71; Wald = 12.90; p = 0.001). The authors concluded that depressive symptoms were related to eating disorders in female adolescents. Thus, girls with some level of depression showed a greater tendency to adopt disordered eating as a daily habit.
Little is known about the relationship between body image (BI) and sociocultural factors in athletes. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between BI and overall and athletic internalization in female track and field athletes in track events, with the participation of 83 young individuals aged 12-17 years. The Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) was used to assess BI. The Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-3 was used to evaluate overall and athletic internalization. Differences were observed in the scores of the "Overall Internalization" (F(1.82)=13.41; p=0.02) and "Athletic Internalization" (F(1.82)=9.83; p=0.04) subscales among athletes who were satisfied and those dissatisfied with their body. The findings indicated relationship between "Overall Internalization" (F(1.82)=23.79; p=0.01) subscale with BSQ scores, but the magnitude of the relationship increased little when the "Athletic Internalization" (F(1.82)=14.33; p=0.01) subscale was included. It was concluded that overall internalization was more related to BI of athletes than athletic internalization.
