RESUMOEsta tese consiste em um esforço etnográfico para compreender algumas transformações que os Arara de Rondônia (Tupi Ramarama) identificam em sua socialidade. A partir do empenho de parte dos meus interlocutores em aparecer sob uma forma povo em um contexto em que as pessoas dizem viver separadas ou por família, analiso e descrevo o Wayo 'at Kanã (em português, Festa do Jacaré), um ritual que instaura um espaço-tempo em que as diferentes aldeias podem se juntar. Para analisar esse ritual e compreender a dinâmica das transformações identificadas pelos Arara, também abordo o xamanismo, a mitologia, o parentesco e o processo de produção de pessoas. A escassez de informações é gritante. Sendo assim, a maior parte das reflexões e dados apresentados são oriundos do meu trabalho de campo. Fragmentos de um campoOs Arara referem-se a si mesmos enquanto um povo como I'tâ tap, "Nós", uma junção da primeira pessoa do plural inclusiva I'tâ seguido do associativo tap (cf. Gabas 1999: x). I'tâ é também um termo que meus anfitriões traduzem por "gente" ou "pessoa". A origem do etnônimo Arara, com o qual meus anfitriões se apresentam perante os não índios e são conhecidos na região, é atribuída aos brancos que assim os chamavam devido ao uso do urucum em todo o corpo e da pena do rabo da arara vermelha, juntamente com uma resina brilhante, no septo nasal. Esses usos perderam-se no tempo.Como no período em que a pesquisa foi realizada as pessoas com quem convivi não demonstraram desagradar-se com a denominação Arara, é com esse nome que me refiro, neste trabalho, àqueles que me receberam. Se há algum desconforto com relação a ele, é, ao menos por enquanto, algo muito sutil. Em uma única conversa que presenciei sobre o assunto, um professor indígena expressou o desejo de que os Arara substituíssem seus sobrenomes nos documentos pessoais oficiais, como a carteira de identidade ou a identificação outrora fornecida pela Funai, por Karo. Este é o nome que a língua falada pelos Arara recebeu de seu primeiro estudioso, o linguista Nilson Gabas Jr., do MuseuParaense Emílio Goeldi, por ser esta a palavra para "arara" no idioma nativo. Maloca, seringal e aldeia são espaços por meio dos quais os Karo-Arara falam de suas trajetórias familiares e da história de seu povo. Pretende-se mostrar como tais espaços podem ser entendidos de duas formas distintas: de um lado, como lugares particulares que são constituídos por (e constituem) grupos de parentes; de outro, como espaços-tempos contrastantes que distinguem socialidades específicas idealmente praticadas em cada um desses espaços-tempos, e que acabam constituindo um coletivo mais amplo, algo como o povo Karo-Arara. As andanças pela região do rio Machado são fundamentais para entender a constituição de lugares, espaços-tempos e coletivos.
