The interactive influence of climate and management factors on leaf area index (LAI) of soybean yield potential has not been investigated in subtropical environments. Such information can help in optimizing current soybean management practices to increase seed yield and efficiency of resource use. The objective of this study was to identify the optimum leaf area index for attaining yield potential in modern soybean cultivars grown in a subtropical environment. A large soybean yield, LAI, and phenology database collected from a combination of on-farm and research-station experiments conducted during four soybean growing seasons (2011)(2012)(2013)(2014)(2015) in southern Brazil was used. The database represented a wide range of weather conditions, soil types, sowing dates, and cultivar maturity groups (MGs). A boundary function was derived for the relationship between soybean yield and LAI at R1 and R5 developmental stages for cultivars of determinate and indeterminate growth habit, and for both types combined. An increase in yield was in line with the increase of LAI for experiments with a small yield gap (soybean yield more than 4.5 Mg ha -1 ). In this case, optimum LAI at R1 growth stage (LAI R1, opt ) to reach the soybean yield potential was between 3.4 (indeterminate) and 4.5 (determinate) whereas the optimal maximum LAI (LAI max,opt ) is between 6.0 and 6.5 for indeterminate and determinate cultivars, respectively. These results suggested that management practices for soybean crops that involve the LAI and high yield potential must be adjusted according to the maturity group, growth habit and sowing date in a subtropical environment.
The objective of this study was to determine an empirical mathematical model to estimate leaf area of different soybean cultivars from leaf dimensions, with emphasis on modern and currently used soybean cultivars in the Rio Grande do Sul State.
Branches contribution and leaf area index evolution in modern cultivars of soybean AbstractThe purposes of this study were to quantify the branches contribution and the leaf area index evolution in modern cultivars of soybean with different maturity groups, stem termination, sowing in different dates and producing regions of soybean in Rio Grande do Sul. Field experiments were conducted during the growing season 2013/2014 in Santa Maria, Júlio de Castilhos and in three soybean crops on the municipalities of Restinga Sêca, Tupanciretã and Água Santa. It were carried out analysis (occurrence date) of reproductive stages and determination total, maximum, of main stem and of branches of leaf area index in thirteen cultivars of soybean. Most cultivars showed a reduction on total leaf area index, maximum, of main stem and of branches with the delay on planting date, independently of the maturity group and stem termination.
ABSTRACT: CLIMATE VARIABILITY IN SOUTHERN BRAZIL PRECIPITATION IN PRESENT AND FUTURE CLIMATEClimate and its changes have been showing great prominence lately. In this way, it is important to analyze the precipitation trends for the understanding of the potential impacts that changes in climate may result in the society. This paper presents an analysis of the precipitation trend in Rio Grande do Sul, for three sets of data, with a comparison of the observed precipitation data and simulated data by RegCM3 Regional Model, as well as an analysis of the trend in a future climate scenario. This analysis was performed using different statistical tests, which calculated the of precipitation trends for the observed precipitation data, for the RegCM3 model data for the same period, 1982-2006, and for the 2070 to 2086 future climate modeled data. Evaluating the percentage of dry and wet events obtained from the observed data (PREC_LA), it was found that the modes in the synoptic band contribute greatly to dry events than to wet events. Yet in the intraseasonal band there is more contribution to the wet than to the dry events. The analyzed modes in the interannual band contribute equally to dry and wet events. However, when we observed the events in the simulated data (PREC_RE), the model failed to reproduce the observed results.
Gladiola (Gladiolus × grandiflorus Hort.) is an important cut flower for small farmers in Brazil. While the El Niño Southern Oscillation, which causes interannual variability to air temperature in Southern Brazil, can shift the optimum planting window of gladiola, an increase in temperature due to climate change can accelerate gladiola flowering and cause injuries by heat. The objective of this study was to assess the potential climate change effects on gladiola optimum planting date for specific market dates and investigate injuries occurrence on spikes in the Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. Field experiments were conducted from 2016 to 2018 at four different locations across the Rio Grande do Sul State to evaluate the performance of the PhenoGlad model in simulating the developmental stages of gladiola. The PhenoGlad model was run on climate scenarios of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) named RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios. The climate change scenarios caused a delay in the optimum planting date to harvest gladiola for All Souls' Day across the Rio Grande do Sul State. For harvesting spikes for Mother's Day, negative anomalies (earliest planting date) occurred in the warmest regions, because the very high temperature extended the crop development. Injuries by heat on spikes reached positive anomalies in 70 % of the years in the warmest regions for scenario RCP8.5. To harvest spikes for Mother's Day, heat injury did not exceed 20 % of the years. Mitigation strategies for farmers to deal with climate change and keep their gladiola production include adjusting the optimum planting date.
-The objective of this work was to estimate the yield potential and the water-limited yield of soybean (Glycine max) in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in two future climate scenarios, SRES A1B and RCP4.5, using the SoySim and Cropgro-Soybean simulation models. In both models, three maturity groups (4.8, 5.5, and 6.0) and six sowing dates (09/01, 10/01, 11/01, 12/01, 01/01, and 02/01) were considered in the SRES A1B-CMIP3 and RCP4.5-CMIP5 scenarios. The analyzed variable was grain yield at 13% moisture ). Soybean yield potential in Rio Grande do Sul should increase up to the end of the 21 st century, according to both scenarios. Water-limited yield of soybean also increases up to the end of the 21 st century, by the SRES A1B-CMIP3 scenario; however, it will decrease in future periods, by the RCP4.5-CMIP5 scenario because of limited soil water.Index terms: Glycine max, climate change, Cropgro-Soybean model, RCP4.5, SoySim model, SRES A1B.
