Numerical modeling is one of the key tools with which we can gain insight into the distribution of marine litter, especially micro-plastics. Over the past decade, a series of numerical simulations have been constructed that specifically target floating marine litter, based on ocean models of various complexity. Some of these models include the effects of currents, waves, and wind as well as a series of processes that impact how particles interact with ocean currents, including fragmentation and degradation. Here, we give an overview of these models, including their spatial and temporal resolution, limitations, availability, and what we have learned from them. Then we focus on floating marine micro-plastics (<5 mm diameter) and we make recommendations for experimental research efforts that can improve the skill of the models by increasing our understanding of the processes that govern the dispersion of marine litter. In addition, we highlight the importance of knowing accurately the sources or entry points of marine plastic debris, including potential sources that have not been incorporated in previous studies (e.g., atmospheric contributions). Finally, we identify information gaps and priority work areas for research. We also highlight the need for appreciating and acknowledging the uncertainty that persists regarding the movement, transportation and accumulation of anthropogenic litter in the marine environment.
A B S T R A C TThe contribution of the polluted São Vicente and Santos estuarine channels to the eutrophication of Santos bay was assessed through the quantification of instantaneous transport of salt, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and phosphate, organic and inorganic matter (OSM and ISM) and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), during dry (austral winter-August/ 1999) and rainy (austral summerJanuary/2000) seasons. Samplings were carried out during spring and neap tides, in flood and ebb phases, in two transversal sections at the mouths of the São Vicente and Santos channels. Instantaneous transport values generally indicated importation of salt to the estuarine channels, exportation of DIN to the bay, mainly as N-NH 4 , at a maximum rate of 1155.1 g s -1 during the rainy season; importation of phosphate during the dry season (maximum of 385 g s -1 ) and exportation of ISM, OSM and Chl-a during periods of greater freshwater discharge. These results demonstrate the great contribution made by the Santos and São Vicente estuaries to the eutrophication of Santos bay, especially in the rainy season.
. Abstract: The Princeton Ocean Model (POM) was implemented for the coastal region of Santos (46°-47°W, 23°40' -24°30'S), with a regular grid ofresolution~I km and 11 sigma levels in the vertical. The model was used in tidal simulations, with the specification of the correspondent oscillations at the boundaries, computed through cotidal maps of the shelf. The model runs considering separately the lunar and solar principal components (M2 and S2), for 5 days each, and the 9 principal tidal constituents composed, for 31 days. The tidal analysis of the resulting time series allowed the obtention of maps with the cotidal lines and the axes of the surface current ellipses. These maps indicate the characteristics of the propagation of the tidal waves in the modeled area, with the spatial distributions of their elevations and currents. The most important aspects discussed in this study are: the contrast of the circulation intensities, between the deeper region and the internal shallow areas; the marked difIerences of current intensities in both sides of Santos Bay; the currents convergence / divergence in São Vicente and Bertioga Channels; tidal assimetries in the shallow regions; and the counterclockwise rotation of the currents in the coastal area. The model can be used for operational predictions of tides and tidal currents in the study area..
• Abstract: A preliminary study of tidal heigbt and tidal current data from Cananéia region made tbrougb harmonic and spectral analysis shows different amplifications and phase delays of the principal tidal components inwards the estuary. M3 tidaI component is particularly amplified in Mar de Cananéia -Mar Pequeno, probably because of near-resonance conditions in the channel. Tidal currents in Mar de Cubatão and Mar de Cananéia show, besides the semidiurnal components, significative presence of M3 and M4 constituents. Residual current spectra show two maio peaks: one , of tidal frequency, attributed to tidal pumping; another, of subtidal frequency, attributed to a long-period cumulative effect, associated to the estuary mean leveI variation.
-(Temporal and spatial variations in the structure of macroalgal communities associated with mangrove trees of Ilha do Cardoso, São Paulo state, Brazil). Temporal and spatial variations in species composition and vertical distribution of macroalgal communities growing on mangrove trees were analyzed bimonthly in the Ilha do Cardoso State Park, São Paulo state (25°03'S and 47°55'W), Southeastern Brazil. The macroalgal communities from mangroves of Perequê and Sítio Grande rivers comprised 10 and 18 taxa respectively. Bostrychia radicans (Mont.) Mont. and B. calliptera (Mont.) Mont. were the predominant taxa, present almost throughout the year and in all the sites studied. The species composition of macroalgal communities from both mangroves presented temporal and spatial variations related to environmental factors. The highest number of taxa was observed during colder, drier months, coinciding with the highest means of high water neap and short periods of continuous emersion (April to August). Some mangrove algae such as B. calliptera, Rhizoclonium spp., Caloglossa spp., and Boodleopsis pusilla (Collins) W. Taylor, Joly et Bernatowicz showed a high degree of tolerance to desiccation, being able to tolerate continuous emersion up to six days. The spatial variations in species composition were related to light, as observed in Catenella caespitosa (Withering) L. Irvine, which occurred in well-lit sites. No pattern of vertical zonation was observed, since Rhizoclonium spp., B. radicans, and B. calliptera occur over the entire vertical range. Variations in the range of vertical distribution of macroalgae of Perequê mangrove were mainly related to the variations in the tidal levels (mean high water neap and/or mean high water spring) while those observed in Sítio Grande mangrove were related to salinity variations, except for B. calliptera and Caloglossa spp. related to tidal levels and high irradiance, respectively.RESUMO -(Variações temporal e espacial na estrutura de comunidades de macroalgas associadas a árvores de manguezais na Ilha do Cardoso, estado de São Paulo, Brasil).
