Abstract: • Abstract: A preliminary study of tidal heigbt and tidal current data from Cananéia region made tbrougb harmonic and spectral analysis shows different amplifications and phase delays of the principal tidal components inwards the estuary. M3 tidaI component is particularly amplified in Mar de Cananéia -Mar Pequeno, probably because of near-resonance conditions in the channel. Tidal currents in Mar de Cubatão and Mar de Cananéia show, besides the semidiurnal components, significative presence of M3 and M4 const… Show more

“…Water circulation in the estuary channels is driven by tidal flow and inflow of freshwater from continental drainage of several small rivers. Tidal periodicity is semidiurnal and the tidal range oscillates between 0.13 m at neap tide and 0.83 m at spring tidal (Miyao and Harari, 1989). The annual average temperature and precipitation in the region are 21.2°C and 2200 mm, respectively.…”

“…According to Miyao and Harari (1989) salinity is the key parameter in determining patterns of estuarine circulation. Salinity has a positive correlation with tidal range, and it allows for the calculation of exchange rates between estuary and adjacent oceanic regions when temperature gradients are not large enough.…”
