A Large Fire Database (LFDB), which includes information on fire location, start date, final size, cause, and suppression action, has been developed for all fires larger than 200 ha in area for Canada for the 1959–1997 period. The LFDB represents only 3.1% of the total number of Canadian fires during this period, the remaining 96.9% of fires being suppressed while <200 ha in size, yet accounts for ∼97% of the total area burned, allowing a spatial and temporal analysis of recent Canadian landscape‐scale fire impacts. On average ∼2 million ha burned annually in these large fires, although more than 7 million ha burned in some years. Ecozones in the boreal and taiga regions experienced the greatest areas burned, with an average of 0.7% of the forested land burning annually. Lightning fires predominate in northern Canada, accounting for 80% of the total LFDB area burned. Large fires, although small in number, contribute substantially to area burned, most particularly in the boreal and taiga regions. The Canadian fire season runs from late April through August, with most of the area burned occurring in June and July due primarily to lightning fire activity in northern Canada. Close to 50% of the area burned in Canada is the result of fires that are not actioned due to their remote location, low values‐at‐risk, and efforts to accommodate the natural role of fire in these ecosystems. The LFDB is updated annually and is being expanded back in time to permit a more thorough analysis of long‐term trends in Canadian fire activity.

Dune fi elds and loess deposits of the Great Plains of North America contain stratigraphic records of eolian activity that can be used to extend the short observational record of drought. We present a 10,000 yr reconstruction of dune activity and dust production in the central Great Plains region, based on 95 optically stimulated luminescence ages. The integration of data from both eolian sand and loess is an important new aspect of this record. Clusters of ages defi ne episodes of extensive eolian activity, which we interpret as a response to frequent severe drought, at 1.0-0.7 ka and 2.3-4.5 ka (with peaks centered on 2.5 and 3.8 ka); sustained eolian activity occurred from 9.6 to 6.5 ka. Parts of this record may be consistent with hypotheses linking Holocene drought to sea surface temperature anomalies in the Pacifi c or Atlantic oceans, or to the El Niño-Southern Oscillation phenomenon, but the record as a whole is diffi cult to reconcile with any of these hypotheses.

[1] Dune fields in parts of northern China contain important stratigraphic records of late Quaternary change in the East Asian monsoon. In this study, 33 new optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages and other measurements from aeolian sediment sections are used to reconstruct the timing of wet-dry climate variation in the Mu Us and Otindag dune fields of north China. The results indicate dune activity and dry climate in the last few hundred years, 14 ka to about 7 -8 ka, and 50 ka to 60 ka. The dunes were mainly stable, implying a wetter climate, between about 7 -8 ka and 2.4 ka. These results imply a lag of several thousand years between peak summer insolation at 10-11 ka and high summer monsoon rainfall after 7 -8 ka. In the investigated regions, the monsoon climate may not respond directly to orbital forcing over millennial time scales. Land surface feedbacks may account for lagged dune field response.

Abstract. Mineral dust plays an important role in the climate system by interacting with radiation, clouds, and biogeochemical cycles. In addition, natural archives show that the dust cycle experienced variability in the past in response to global and local climate change. The compilation of the DIRTMAP (Dust Indicators and Records from Terrestrial and MArine Palaeoenvironments) paleodust data sets in the last 2 decades provided a benchmark for paleoclimate models that include the dust cycle, following a time slice approach. We propose an innovative framework to organize a paleodust data set that builds on the positive experience of DIRTMAP and takes into account new scientific challenges by providing a concise and accessible data set of temporally resolved records of dust mass accumulation rates and particle grain size distributions. We consider data from ice cores, marine sediments, loess–paleosol sequences, lake sediments, and peat bogs for this compilation, with a temporal focus on the Holocene period. This global compilation allows the investigation of the potential, uncertainties, and confidence level of dust mass accumulation rate reconstructions and highlights the importance of dust particle size information for accurate and quantitative reconstructions of the dust cycle. After applying criteria that help to establish that the data considered represent changes in dust deposition, 45 paleodust records have been identified, with the highest density of dust deposition data occurring in the North Atlantic region. Although the temporal evolution of dust in the North Atlantic appears consistent across several cores and suggests that minimum dust fluxes are likely observed during the early to mid-Holocene period (6000–8000 years ago), the magnitude of dust fluxes in these observations is not fully consistent, suggesting that more work needs to be done to synthesize data sets for the Holocene. Based on the data compilation, we used the Community Earth System Model to estimate the mass balance of and variability in the global dust cycle during the Holocene, with dust loads ranging from 17.2 to 20.8 Tg between 2000 and 10 000 years ago and with a minimum in the early to mid-Holocene (6000–8000 years ago).

Samples of 255 noncalcareous A, Ap, and AB horizons from selected major land resource areas (MLRA) in the north central USA were used to develop equations for predicting organic C content, as determined with a Leco C analyzer, from weight loss‐on‐ignition (LOI). Organic C concentrations of the samples ranged from 1.09 to 114.6 g kg−1 Within each MLRA, strong linear relationships were observed between LOI and organic C measured by the Leco instrument, with r2 ranging from 0.94 to 0.98. Predictive equations developed by least‐squares regression were significantly different for individual MLRA's. Loss‐on‐ignition is a rapid, inexpensive, and accurate method for estimating organic C concentration in soils of the north central USA. We recommend that unique predictive equations be developed for individual soil‐geographic regions.
