This study compared the two breed groups of Girolando (½ Holstein ½ Gyr vs. ¾ Holstein ¼ Gyr) through analysis of the percentages (stressed or non-stressed cows) of rectal temperature (RT), respiratory rate (RR) and pregnancy rate (PR), and means of production and reproduction parameters to determine the group best suited to rearing in semiarid tropical climate. The experiment was conducted at the farm, in the municipality of Umirim, State of Ceará, Brazil. Two hundred and forty cows were used in a 2 × 2 factorial study; 120 of each group were kept under an intensive system during wet and dry seasons. The environmental parameters obtained were relative humidity (RH), air temperature (AT), and the temperature and humidity index (THI). Pregnancy diagnosis (PD) was determined by ultrasonography 30 days after artificial insemination (AI). The milk production of each cow was recorded with automated milkings in the farm. The variables were expressed as mean and standard error, evaluated by ANOVA at 5% probability using the GLM procedure of SAS. Chi-square test at 5% probability was applied to data of RT, RR, pregnancy rate (PR), and the number of AIs to obtain pregnancy. The majority of ½ Holstein cows showed mean values of RT and RR within the normal range in both periods and shifts. Most animals of the ¾ Holstein group exhibited the RR means above normal during the afternoon in the rainy and dry periods and RT means above normal during the afternoon in the dry period. After analyses, ½ Holstein crossbred cows are more capable of thermoregulating than ¾ Holstein cows under conditions of thermal stress, and the dry period was more impacting for bovine physiology with significant changes in physiological parameters, even for the first breed group. Knowledge of breed groups adapted to climatic conditions of northeastern Brazil can directly assist cattle farmers in selecting animals best adapted for forming herds.
Palavras-chave: área de olho de lombo, casca de soja, espessura de gordura, farelo de gérmen de milho, parâmetros plasmáticos Performance, Plasma Parameters and Carcass Traits of Steers Fed Diet with SunflowerMeal and Different Energy Sources, in Feedlot ABSTRACT -Performance, plasmatic parameters and carcass traits of 24 3/4 Simmental 1/4 Nellore steers with 370 kg initial average weight was evaluated. The experimental diets were composed by corn silage (55%) and concentrate with sunflower meal as protein source and ground corn as energy source (MI). Ground corn was partially substituted by soybean hulls (CS) or by corn meal (FGM). The period of intake and average weight gain evaluation was 49 days. Blood samples were collected to measure plasmatic parameters: glucose, urea, total protein and albumin. Right half frozen carcass was used to measure the loin eye area (LEA), fat thickness (FT) and carcass length. Diets did not influence plasma parameters. The average of plasmatic urea was high (26 mg/dL), in relation to normal serum pattern. The different energy sources did not affect average weight gain and feed intake:gain ratio, with averages of 1.15 kg/day and 9.17 kg DM feed intake/kg gain. Diet did not influence dressing percentage (52.8% final weight and 63.1% of empty body weight), LEA (63.6 cm 2 ) and FT (4.7 mm). Soybean hulls and corn meal could replace partially ground corn without affecting performance and carcass traits on steers, allowing that the ingredients choice be realized through economic analysis.Key Words: corn germ meal, fat thickness, Longissimus muscle area, plasmatic parameters, soybean ...
Palavras-chave: FDA indigestível, FDN indigestível, marcadores, método in situ, método in vitro, óxido crômico Comparison of Markers Used to Estimate Fecal Production and Digesta Flow of CattleABSTRACT -In order to estimate fecal production and digesta flow of cattle, three assays were carried out using indigestible NDF and ADF as internal markers, applying in vitro and in situ incubation procedures, as well as chromium oxide as an external marker. The experiment was a randomized block design in a factorial arrangement. Indigestible NDF and ADF contents exhibited high variation despite the methodology employed (in vitro or in situ). These results indicate that, eventually, 144-h incubation time does not reproduce the indigestible total fraction. The estimates of fecal production and duodenal digesta flow, calculated in function of the marker used, presented a variable behavior according to the roughage, which implies its effect on the marker concentration. Regarding important criteria involved in their determination, these internal markers can be used as predictors of the evaluated parameters.
Palavras-chave: bovinos, fibra, hidrólise, tratamento alcalino, volumoso Effects of Sugar Cane Processing on Digestibility, Intake and Rate of PassageABSTRACT -Four crossbred bovines (Zebu x Holstein) fed in nature, hydrolyzed, hydrolyzed sugar cane hay and silage as roughage sources constituting 70% of the diets were used to study the effect of alkali treatment of sugar cane (1.5% of NaOH at 50%) on dietary total digestibility and dry matter intake and rate of passage of sugar canes. The fiber was the most influenced fraction by the alkali treatment and increased at least by 45% of digestibility. The increases of 25.0 and 16.7% on intake of hydrolyzed-(1.5% BW) and hydrolyzed sugar cane hay-based diets (1.4% BW) were probably influenced by the higher fiber digestibility. The estimated values of ruminal and cecco-colon rate of passage and retention time in each treatment did not differ among in nature, hydrolyzed and hydrolyzed sugar cane hay-based diet, whereas the lowest rates (1.5 and 7.4%/h) and highest retention time (71.4 hours) were observed for the hydrolyzed silage. It was concluded that alkali treatment with sodium hydroxide, with or without sugar cane hay, increased fiber digestion of hydrolyzed sugar cane in total tract and increased intake, without effect on passage rate. However, post ensilage of hydrolyzed sugar cane could not show effects.
A lignina subestimou significativamente a digestibilidade. Palavras-chave: casca de soja, farelo de gérmen de milho, fonte de carboidrato, indicadores internos Intake, Total and Partial Digestibility of Diets with Sunflower Meal and Three Energy Sources in Confined SteersABSTRACT -Feed intake, partial and total digestibility and nitrogen balance were evaluated in confined steers. Three crossbreed steers, rumen and duodenum cannulated, were allotted to two 3 x 3 Latin square experimental design. The experimental diets were composed by corn silage (60%) and concentrate with sunflower meal as protein source and ground corn as energy source (MI). The ground corn was partially substituted by soybean hulls (CS) or by corn germ meal (FGM). Lignin and indigestible ADF (iADF), NDF (iNDF) and lignin (i-lignin) determined by 144 h of in vitro digestion were used as markers to estimate the total and partial diet digestibility of diets. The fiber intake was higher on CS diet, however no effect on dry matter intake was observed. Lignin underestimated significantly the digestibility. Indigestible ADF, iNDF and i-lignin was able to estimate total digestibility, however iADF and i-lignina did not estimate adequately the partial digestibility. Ruminal ADF digestibility was influenced by diets with higher values for CS and similar values for FGM, in relation to MI. Total ADF digestibility was higher in diet CS, but the other nutrients digestibility were not ...
Palavras-chave: interceptação da radiação fotossinteticamente ativa, Panicum maximum, sistema de produção Chemical composition, digestibility and in situ degradation of sheep diet on Tanzania grass with three defoliation frequencies ABSTRACT -The objective of this study was to evaluate the chemical composition, digestibility and in situ degradation of dry matter of the diet consumed by sheep grazing on Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania under three defoliation frequencies, determined by the interception of the photosynthetically active radiation in the canopy (PAR) of 85, 95 and 97% on the first and fourth days of the grazing period. A randomized complete design in a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement (three defoliation frequencies and two days grazing), with four replications (poles). To determine the chemical composition, digestibility and an in situ dry matter degradation trial, a grazing simulation was carried out on the 1 st and 4 th days. Reduced defoliation frequency decreased the chemical composition, digestibility and in situ degradation of the diet. Thus defoliation frequency of tanzania grass is recommended of less or equal to 95% photosynthetically active radiation to maintain pasture quality.
A split-plot design, consisting on the addition levels the plots and the incubation times the sub-plots, with four replicates, was adopted. For the silages making, the elephant grass was cut 70 days-old and mixed to the by-product, in 20 plastic drums. The samples were dried, grid in a bolter of 5 mm mesh, being used 3 g of samples in each nylon bag, for incubation in the rumem for 0; 6; 48 e 96 hours; 2 ram without defined breed were used. Was observed increased the disappearance of the DM until the level 13.37% of addition of (AGBP) the elephant grass silages for the incubation time 48 hours, this level was that presented the most disappearance DM. For the NDF the disappearance increased until 16% of addition. For the whole of parameters of degradation, was observed that the level of addition of 16% of (AGBP) presented the most values for the potential and effective degradability of variables in question. The inclusion of the annatto grain by-product for elephant grass silage results in greater potential and effective degradability.
