Objective:We conducted a comprehensive review of the most current data available on the antihypertensive effects of 29 different nutraceuticals.
Design:In this review, we collected evidence from clinical trials and meta-analyses of clinical trials with human subjects that are representative of the general adult population; studies of infants, children, and pregnant women were excluded. Observational studies were included in some cases as supplementary evidence, and in vitro or animal studies were included only for the purpose of explaining hypotensive mechanisms. PubMed served as the primary search engine.
Outcome measures:The efficacy of each nutrient and botanical was demonstrated by a treatment that resulted in a reduction of either systolic or diastolic blood pressure in humans.
Results:All of the reviewed botanical and nutrient supplements, with the exception of French maritime pine bark extract and maitake (Grifola frondosa), have been demonstrated to effectively lower blood pressure in humans with good tolerability. Conclusions: Current data supporting the use of nutrients and botanicals in the treatment of blood pressure are encouraging.
Objectives: to present an interventional radiology standard of practice on the use of inferior vena cava filters (IVCFs) in patients with or at risk to develop venous thromboembolism (VTE) from the Iberoamerican Interventional Society (SIDI) and Spanish Vascular and Interventional Radiology Society (SERVEI). Methods: a group of twenty-two interventional radiologist experts, from the SIDI and SERVEI societies, attended online meetings to develop a current clinical practice guideline on the proper indication for the placement and retrieval of IVCFs. A broad review was undertaken to determine the participation of interventional radiologists in the current guidelines and a consensus on inferior vena cava filters. Twenty-two experts from both societies worked on a common draft and received a questionnaire where they had to assess, for IVCF placement, the absolute, relative, and prophylactic indications. The experts voted on the different indications and reasoned their decision. Results: a total of two-hundred-thirty-three articles were reviewed. Interventional radiologists participated in the development of just two of the eight guidelines. The threshold for inclusion was 100% agreement. Three absolute and four relative indications for the IVCF placement were identified. No indications for the prophylactic filter placement reached the threshold. Conclusion: interventional radiologists are highly involved in the management of IVCFs but have limited participation in the development of multidisciplinary clinical practice guidelines.
The Marital Satisfaction Questionnaire for Older Persons (MSQ-FOP) measures marital satisfaction in a manner relevant to older adults. This study examined the psychometric properties of the Spanish-language version with 81 Latino/Hispanic Spanishspeaking couples aged 55 to 93 residing in Puerto Rico. Results revealed a robust structure, confirming the composition of the original scale version. Three components summarized the scale items: Compatibility/Affective Quality, Communication, and Sex/Health. This factor structure was essentially consistent with that reported by questionnaire authors for the original English-language version. Internal consistency coefficients (Cronbach's alpha) for the full scale and subscales ranged from .96 to .83. This corroborates the construct validity and the reliability of the MSQFOP, suggesting it is an adequate measure of marital satisfaction for use with Spanish-speaking older adults. Clinical and research uses of the MSQFOP are discussed.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
