El método más común para estimar variables dasométricas a gran o pequeña escala es el inventario forestal basado en un muestreo en campo. En la actualidad la teledetección ofrece un abanico de posibilidades para incorporarse en las estimaciones forestales, tal es el caso de LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) que permite caracterizar de forma tridimensional el bosque. En este trabajo se estudió la relación entre datos derivados de LiDAR con los datos medidos en campo para estimar variables dasométricas como: área basal (AB), biomasa total (BT), cobertura arbórea (COB) y volumen de madera (VOL), mediante cuatro métodos: 1) regresión lineal múltiple, 2) regresión no lineal, 3) estimador de razón y 4) inventario forestal tradicional (muestreo estratificado). Las estimaciones totales derivadas del estimador de razón se encuentran dentro del intervalo de confianza al 95% calculado mediante inventario tradicional para AB, BT y VOL, siendo este el estimador que arroja los valores más cercanos y precisos a la estimación mediante inventario. En general, las estimaciones de los modelos no lineales fueron los más optimistas con respecto al inventario tradicional. Los resultados indican una buena relación (R2 > 0.50) entre las métricas de LiDAR y datos de campo, principalmente los percentiles de altura y las tasas de retorno sobre una altura definida. A partir de los modelos lineales, se generó la cartografía de cada una de las variables analizadas.

The proper estimation of above-ground biomass (AGB) stocks of managed forests is a prerequisite to quantifying their role in climate change mitigation. The aim of this study was to analyze the spatial variability of AGB and its uncertainty between actively managed pine and unmanaged pine-oak reference forests in central Mexico. To investigate the determinants of AGB, we analyzed variables related to forest management, stand structure, topography, and climate. We developed linear (LM), generalized additive (GAM), and Random Forest (RF) empirical models to derive spatially explicit estimates and their uncertainty, and compared them. AGB was strongly influenced by forest management, as LiDAR-derived stand structure and stand age explained 80.9% to 89.8% of its spatial variability. The spatial heterogeneity of AGB varied positively with stand structural complexity and age in the managed forests. The type of predictive model had an impact on estimates of total AGB in our study site, which varied by as much as 19%. AGB densities varied from 0 to 492 ± 17 Mg ha−1 and the highest values were predicted by GAM. Uncertainty was not spatially homogeneously distributed and was higher with higher AGB values. Spatially explicit AGB estimates and their association with management and other variables in the study site can assist forest managers in planning thinning and harvesting schedules that would maximize carbon stocks on the landscape while continuing to provide timber and other ecosystem services. Our study represents an advancement toward the development of efficient strategies to spatially estimate AGB stocks and their uncertainty, as the GAM approach was used for the first time with improved results for such a purpose.

La predicción del crecimiento y el rendimiento de una especie forestal maderable es un requisito fundamental para planificar su manejo racional. El objetivo de este trabajo fue actualizar las funciones que componen un sistema compatible de crecimiento y rendimiento para Pinus patula, desarrollado bajo el enfoque de modelos explícitos de totalidad del rodal. Se reajustaron los parámetros del sistema mediante la técnica de regresión aparentemente no relacionada. Para ello, se utilizó información dasométrica derivada de cuatro inventarios realizados periódicamente en 42 parcelas permanentes de muestreo de 400 m2 en Hidalgo, México. La estructura de las funciones originales del sistema, en su mayoría, generaron buen ajuste y comportamiento gráfico satisfactorio. La productividad del rodal se describe mediante un patrón polimórfico de crecimiento, el cual está interrelacionado con las ecuaciones de área basal, diámetro promedio y volumen total de fuste por hectárea. La función de mortalidad corresponde a un modelo exponencial ajustado bajo mínimos cuadrados no lineales. El reajuste del sistema permitió ampliar el rango de validez de las ecuaciones de crecimiento a 31 años de edad del rodal. El nuevo sistema sugiere un turno técnico que maximiza el volumen de alrededor de 20 años para el sitio promedio. Este resultado sugiere que el turno de 40 años, actualmente usado en los planes de manejo en la región, puede ser acortado, siempre y cuando la densidad del rodal se maneje correctamente.

As climate change negotiations progress, monitoring biomass and carbon stocks is becoming an important part of the current forest research. Therefore, national governments are interested in developing forest-monitoring strategies using geospatial technology. Among statistical methods for mapping biomass, there is a nonparametric approach called k-nearest neighbor (kNN). We compared four variations of distance metrics of the kNN for the spatially-explicit estimation of aboveground biomass in a portion of the Mexican north border of the intertropical zone. Satellite derived, climatic, and topographic predictor variables were combined with the Mexican National Forest Inventory (NFI) data to accomplish the purpose. Performance of distance metrics applied into the kNN algorithm was evaluated using a cross validation leave-one-out technique. The results indicate that the Most Similar Neighbor (MSN) approach maximizes the correlation between predictor and response variables (r=0.9). Our results are in agreement with those reported in the literature. These findings confirm the predictive potential of the MSN approach for mapping forest variables at pixel level under the policy of Reducing Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+).

Se desarrolló un modelo de crecimiento y rendimiento para Pinus patula con el enfoque de modelos explícitos de totalidad del rodal. En su construcción se utilizó información dasométrica derivada de tres remediciones en 42 parcelas permanentes de muestreo de 400 m2, en una crono-secuencia en Zacualtipán, Hidalgo, México. La productividad de los rodales se estimó mediante un patrón anamórfico de crecimiento, basado en el modelo de Hossfeld IV e interrelacionado con las ecuaciones de área basal, diámetro promedio y volumen total de fuste por hectárea, con la técnica de regresión aparentemente no relacionada. La mortalidad se ajustó a un modelo exponencial simple, con el método de mínimos cuadrados no lineales. Al simular el escenario de productividad del sitio promedio, el modelo obtenido detectó un periodo (turno técnico) para la maximización de volumen total de madera en rollo por hectárea de 25 años, lo que contrasta con el turno empírico de 50 años utilizado en la zona desde 1980.

Within the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) framework, a hierarchical model was created considering anthropogenic, genetic and ecological criteria and sub-criteria that directly affect Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.)) risk of extinction in central Mexico. The sub-criteria values were standardized, weighted, and ordered by importance in a pairwise comparison matrix; the model was mathematically integrated to quantify the degree of extinction risk for each of the 29 populations present in the study area. The results indicate diverse levels of risk for the populations, ranging from very low to very high. Estanzuela, Presa Jaramillo, Peñas Cargadas and Plan del Baile populations have very low risk, with values less than 0.25. On the other hand, Vicente Guerrero, Morán, Minatitlán, La Garita and Tonalapa populations have very high risk (>0.35) because they are heavily influenced by anthropogenic (close to roads and towns), ecological (presence of exotic species and little or no natural regeneration) and genetic (presence of mature to overmature trees and geographic isolation) factors. In situ conservation activities, prioritizing their implementation in populations at most risk is highly recommended; in addition, germplasm collection for use of assisted gene flow and migration approaches, including artificial OPEN ACCESSForests 2015, 6 1599 reforestation, should be considered in these locations.
