This study aimed to highlight and analyze the nurses' practices in care management described in the scientific production in Brazil and internationally, through an integrative review. It was examined articles published between 2005 and 2010, in the LILACS, SciELO, BDENF and CINAHL databases, with the descriptors Management and Administration, in conjunction with Care and Nursing, and the terms Nursing Management and Nursing Care, totaling 27 publications. The management of care performed by nurses is directly related to the search for quality care and better working conditions through actions such as: care realization, human and material resources management, leadership, assistance planning, nursing team training, care coordination and evaluation of nursing actions.
Grounded Theory (GT) has undergone many transformations since its proposition as a research method in the 1960s. As a result of these changes, three different GT approaches have been outlined: classic, straussian and constructivist ground theory, each with its peculiarities, but mainly concerning data analysis. Thus, this study aimed to describe and compare the data analysis process adopted by the different methodological perspectives of GT. The text is organized into two topics. Firstly, we present the common and differentiating characteristics of the three methodological perspectives of GT. In sequence, the data analysis system adopted in each of the GT methodological perspectives is described and exemplified, varying between two and three stages, and may or may not include the use of the paradigmatic model. Thus, this study provides support for understanding the different data analysis systems adopted in GT, which may contribute to the rigor and scientific quality of nursing research adopting this method.
WORK ORGANIZATION OF A HEALTH TEAM IN ATTENDING THE USER IN URGENCY AND EMERGENCY SITUATIONSABSTRACT: The objective of this paper is to analyze the organization of a health team while rendering services in urgency and emergency situations in a hospital unit in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It was a qualitative case study. The data was collected through observation and semi-structured interviews with health professionals between June and September of 2007. The data analysis followed a qualitative approach: ordering, classification by relevance, synthesis, and interpretation. Teamwork is divided into death-risk cases, assistance to patients under observation, and attention to users with non-emergency cases. Thus, professionals are overloaded and patients quite often are not rendered the right service. The study offers support for reorganizing work processes, aiming to improve the quality and effectiveness of emergency service. DESCRIPTORS:Emergencies. Emergency medical services. Patient care team. Aim To investigate the nurses' work environment in university hospitals during the COVID‐19 pandemic in Brazil. Background The COVID‐19 pandemic brought challenging times for nurses worldwide. In Brazil, as well as in several countries, nurses are working hard in hospital settings caring for patients infected with the virus, sometimes with unfavourable work environment conditions. Methods This study was a convergent embedded mixed methods research. The sample comprised 104 nurses from three Brazilian university hospitals. Data were collected in April–June 2020 from an online questionnaire with a self‐reporting Likert scale survey designed to measure the nurses' perceptions of their work environment. Qualitative data in the form of written comments were also collected through an open question. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. Results The quantitative results showed that the responses to ‘I received training on the correct use of personal protective equipment’ and ‘I am afraid of being infected’ items had the best and worst evaluations, respectively. The qualitative findings revealed five themes: feeling of insecurity, lack of personal protective equipment, lack of diagnostic tests, changes in the care flow and fear of the unknown. Conclusion The study has highlighted the challenges faced by hospital nurses while caring for patients with COVID‐19. Implications for Nursing and Nursing Policy The gaps identified will assist the policymakers and hospital managers in developing policies to enhance the support offered to nurses and improve the care provided to patients with COVID‐19 in university hospitals. The results also indicate the need for attention to the mental health of the professionals due to the increasing workload and treatment of an illness hitherto unknown.
Objective: To describe nurses' recommendations for good patient safety practices in the operating room. Method: Quantitative, descriptive and exploratory research developed from an online survey of 220 operating room nurses from different regions of Brazil. The data processing for textual analysis was performed by the software IRAMUTEQ. Results: There were eight recommendations: (1) Involvement of the multiprofessional team and the managers of the institution; (2) Establishment of a patient safety culture; (3) Use of the safe surgery checklist; (4) Improvement of interpersonal communication; (5) Expansion of nurses' performance; (6) Adequate availability of physical, material and human resources; (7) Individual search for professional updating; and (8) Development of continuing education actions. Conclusion: These recommendations can be used as care management strategies by nurses for patient safety in the operating room.
Objective: to describe our experience integrating quantitative and qualitative data in a mixed methods study. Methods: we described our experience through real-life examples based on a nursing doctoral thesis on professional practice governance within a hospital environment. Results: three main topics are delineated in this article: the foundation, characteristics, and typologies of mixed methods research; quantitative and qualitative data collection, analysis, and integration; and the benefits and challenges of mixed methods research. Conclusion:it is supported that a mixed method research allowed for the identification of the convergence and divergence between the qualitative and the quantitative data, contributing for the production of results that complement each other.
