In total, 140 populations of the genus Meloidogyne collected from representative horticultural regions of Spain and maintained at the Department of Agroecology, Institute of Agrarian Sciences, Madrid were characterized using perineal morphology, sequenced characterized amplified region polymerase chain reaction with species-specific primers, and bioassay. Using a modified North Carolina differential host test as a basis, 13 Meloidogyne populations did not fit into the published race scheme. These populations had very limited host ranges, reproducing only on susceptible tomato cv. Marmande and sometimes also on tobacco cv. NC95 and the pepper cv. Sonar in the case of Meloidogyne arenaria. They did not reproduce on cotton or peanut. The species and new races were identified as M. incognita races 5 (6 populations) and 6 (2 populations) and M. javanica race 5 (2 populations), with new records of M. arenaria race 3 (2 populations) and M. javanica race 1 (23 populations) for Spain.

Soil biodisinfestation is the process generated after the incorporation of organic amendments followed by a plastic cover to control soilborne diseases. Among organic amendments, the use of agricultural by-products could be an interesting alternative as it promotes circular economy. In this study, beer bagasse and defatted rapeseed cake together with fresh cow manure were incorporated into the soil (1.5, 0.5, and 20 kg/m2, fresh weight, respectively) to assess their capacity to reduce disease incidence caused by the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita in protected lettuce crops and develop suppressive soils. The trial was conducted in a commercial greenhouse for 7 weeks during which temperature was continuously recorded at three different soil depths (15, 30, and 45 cm). Short- and long-term effects were assessed: before treatment, after treatment, after first crop post-treatment and one year post-treatment. Disease incidence and changes in nematode community structure were analyzed along with microbiological properties and general physicochemical parameters. After biodisinfestation, microbiological activity significantly increased in the treated soils and changes in the nematode community structure were detected in detriment of M. incognita and other plant-parasitic nematodes. These effects were more apparent after the first crop post-treatment than right after biodisinfestation. In the first crop after biodisinfestation, lettuce yield increased in the treated plots and root galling indices were significantly lower. One year after treatment, differences between treatments could be observed in the incidence of the damage caused by M. incognita that remained lower in the treated plots. In this trial, the addition of beer bagasse and rapeseed cake along with fresh manure in biodisinfestation treatment demonstrated nematicidal effects against M. incognita. Moreover, we suggest that the compounds released during the degradation of these by-products and the sub-lethal temperatures achieved in this trial during biodisinfestation (<42°C) were the key to develop suppressive soils in the long-term.

Two types of Barbarea vulgaris R. Br. (Brassicaceae) were tested to compare their resistance and susceptibility to powdery mildew, Erysiphe cruciferarum Opiz ex L. Junell (Erysiphales: Erysiphaceae), root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita (Kofoid & White) Chitwoodi (Tylenchida: Heteroderidae), and western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande (Thysanoptera: Thripidae). In experiments conducted in the greenhouse, the percentage of plants showing powdery mildew symptoms ranged from 54.2 to 83.3% in P-type B. vulgaris plants and from 0 to 20.8% in G-type B. vulgaris plants.In plants infected by powdery mildew, the percentage of leaves affected was higher in Ptype than in G-type plants, ranging from 11.8 to 21.1% in P-type plants, and from 0 to 0.36% in G-type plants. Infection by powdery mildew was more likely to occur on the leaves of largest diameter. Root galling showed that G-and P-type plants were equally attacked by root-knot nematode, but the multiplication rate of the nematode was 4.1 to 7.6 times higher in P-type than in G-type plants. Significantly more leaves per plant were damaged by western flower thrips in P-type (73.1 to 88.3% of leaves affected) than in Gtype plants (2.1 to 2.9% of leaves affected). The total numbers of adult and immature thrips found per plant on P-type plants were, respectively, 29.9 and 2.5, while on G-type plants less than 0.3 adult and immature thrips were found per plant. This study indicates that Gtype B. vulgaris could be a source of resistance to powdery mildew and western flower thrips.
