The chlorhexidine regimen demonstrated excellent bactericidal efficacy throughout an operating list, and was superior to povidine-iodine scrubbing in all aspects. The alcoholic chlorhexidine regimen is simpler and should have wide surgical application.
1. A study of fifty-nine patients with protrusion of the acetabulum showed that they fell into three age groups: those in their teens, those aged thirty-five to fifty years, and those presenting from fifty-one years onwards. 2. The juvenile age group was investigated clinically and biochemically but no causative metabolic factor was found. 3. The familial incidence was confirmed by radiological and biochemical surveys of several families. 4. The results of treatment show that when conservative treatment is insufficient a total hip replacement gives the best result from operation.
A retrospective study of twenty-six patients with 'non union' of the femoral neck treated by fibular gone graft, with or without subtrochanteric osteotomy, over the past twenty years is discussed. These cases of 'non union' often result from unrecognized fracture, poor primary reduction, and/or inadequate internal fixation of the fracture. Preoperatively one should be reasonably certain of the viability of the femoral head, as evidenced by bone scan. Bone graftlng is preferable to prosthetic replacement in patlents with 'non union' of lntracapsular femoral neck fractures, except in the frail and the elderly.
Despite being privy to the same published papers, the THR prosthesis and fixation preferences of UK and Australian orthopaedic surgeons are markedly different. This may be because of interpretation of papers, peers, personal experience, patient assessment, budgets, institutions, theories, fashions, differences in autonomy and advertising.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
